ross (1525), charlotte, North Carolina, USA Jul 26, 2006 2006 Bottle from Chris (chriso420) Thanks man! THIS is what a double IPA should be. Pours out a clouded yellow color with a creamy white head. Smell is hops, pine, grapefruit, and spices. Taste is similar, bitter and malty and exceptionally well balanced. Sure its low ABV for a double IPA, but who really cares? This IPA is up there with Dreadnaught without the massive bitterness. Very nicely balanced, very easy to drink, and just great in general. Thanks chris for sending, and thanks Alan for brewing this great beer. Glad I have another one of these. Fucking Fantastic.
BrotherGrendel (135), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 23, 2008 Appearance is a cloudy orange hue, minimal white lacing dissipates to a thin ring, fair light lacing.
Smell is mostly lighter hops, mostly citrus and pine, grassy floral tones peak through, sweet fruits, chalk, and slight alcohol.
Taste is mostly bitter and sour grapefruit hops, fleshed out by tones of pine resin, sweet orange, and floral/grass essence, some sweet malts in the middle and a bitter dry finish.
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, watery creamy texture lacks some of the resin characteristic of this style, mild carbonation.
Drinkability is high, I would be hesitant to consider this a true DIPA, the 7%abv and relatively moderate hop profile is more reminiscent of a IPA or 1.5IPA, this is very easy-to-drink hop treat that is lacking in any exciting flavors but is nonetheless a solid offering from Portland. smith4498 (339), Miami, Florida, USA Aug 23, 2008 Pours hazy light orange with white head. Light citrus hop aroma overpowered by sweet maltiness. Flavor is a nice balance between bitter citrus hops and sweet malts. Medium body with low carbonation and a syrupy mouthfeel. Ver nice. Definately for those who like a sweeter, maltier DIPA. cbeers21 (376), Miami, Florida, USA Aug 22, 2008 Cool bottle. Nice hazy orange pour with obvious piney citrusy scents to be smelled, along with tangy, toasted aromas of orange, grapefruit, canned pineapple and applesauce. Nice biting hops bitterness taste, with the hops being the predominant presence; yet it ramains balanced and quenching due to a subtle and worthy malt balancing act. This presents a complex flavor profile with an enjoyable drinkability. Very nice indeed. jsh12bama (211), Alabama, USA Aug 18, 2008 Bottle. Pours golden with thick white head. Nice floral aroma of hops. Taste is citrus hops with medium mouthfeel. Seemed on the lighter side for a IIPA. kseecs16 (533), Westmont, Illinois, USA Aug 18, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep golden with a thin wispy off-white head that clings to the glass. Piney soapy resinous hops aroma. Flavor is richly sweet, mixture of floral and piney hops with a nice bite. Not overly bitter, but a nice lingering bitterness. Full bodied.
