The aroma is orangy, malty and with alcohol. Hops aren’t too apparent in the aroma. The flavor is fairly bitter (simcoe, no wonder!) and not too sweet or malty. The alcohol flavor meshes very well with the bitterness. There is a creamy mouthfeel and it is not as oxidized as expected. Great beer! Bockyhorsey (2554), Mesa, Arizona, USA

Some paticles floating in glass were also present and beer had a good head to it. Alcohol was present on the finish Sancho (245), Da Bronx, New York, USA

Intoxicating hop aroma of a delicious IPA, with no malt or spice scents. Flavour is like an awesome high alcohol IPA. Well balanced and delicious as hell. Not what I expect for a Barley Wine but an excellent beer. jimhilt (1691), Bow, New Hampshire, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 13, 2004 Pours with a five-finger+, bubbly light tan head that explodes out of the bottle, fades slowly and leaves a good lace. Cloudy amber color with chunky bits at the bottom. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Nose is raisiny. Starts on the sweet side but some bitterness comes in and lingers. There are better barley wines like Dogfish Head’s Old School. $4.25 for a 12oz bottle from Vintage Cellar Blacksburg, VA. SpringsLicker (2043), Tennessee, USA

This foamed heavily upon opening. Not a gush but a slow continous eruption and poured a huge head that wouldn’t die down. Peaks like merengue. The bottle continues to push foam out for 10 minutes after opening.
The body is hazy and golden in color.
Very fruity aroma with oranges and caramel.
The flavor is sweet and fruity but not cloying in any way, alcohol and hops at the back. Very well balanced and warming. Good body and mouthfeel but this isn’t a heavy syrupy type Barleywine. Enjoyable sipping.

Sweet, malty, caramel aroma. Flavor is an odd mix of caramel, toffee and grapefruit. Kind of thin bodied with very little carbonation. May be an off bottle as most people have told me this beer has a fairly aggressive carbonation. Still was rather enjoyable.
Rerate 8/4/05 Picked up another ’02 and felt a rerate was necessary. Same aroma and flavor profile as previous bottle, but this bottle poured with a huge off white head and was nicely carbonated. Will raise the appearance score froma 3 to a 5, the palate from a 3 to a 4, flavor from 6 to 7 and overall from 14 to 16. joeec5 (204), bayonne, New Jersey, USA
