Commercial Description:
Doggie Claws has a deep copper color and an intense hop character. I use Simcoe and Amarillo hops along with Organic Pilsner malt, British crystal and dark wild flower honey collected on Mt. Hood. The beer is ready to drink now but will improve with age. Happy Holidays from the curs at Hair of the Dog. - Alan Sprints, Brewmaster

2008 bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with a small but lasting off white head. Aroma of honey, sweet malts, caramel, and a good dose of citrus to back everything up. Taste is sweet honey, citrus hops, sweet malt, caramel, and almost a light molasses finish. Full mouth feel with a moderate amount of bitterness and a warm but smooth finish. A damn fine brew.

Bottle from bottletrek. Pours hazy brown with no head. Aroma of caramel, fruit, and since this one is newer...dominated by hops, mainly citrus. Hides the 10.5% very well and it doesn’t seem as thick or have the syrup consistency some other barleywines can get. Very good.

12oz bottle of 2006 vintage. I’ve had this several times before (I bought a whole case) but never got around to rating it. Man is it aging nicely. Pours with almost no head and no carbonation at all. Wildly aromatic with fruit notes, toffee and apricot. More toffee, figs, tea (maybe I’m imagining that one), excellent malt and a lingering, hop bite. There’s very little evidence of the alcohol as this one ages. It really has developed beautifully. Wonderful!

Best beer from my session at Sals. Great big fresh nose. Huge sweet floral tones. Full bodied. Rich and flavourful. There is lots of fruit, particularly apricot. Not as sticky and over the top as some other barley wines, therefore I think I enjoyed it that much more. Really well done for the style.

2005 vintage. Mature, full aroma of sweet fruit, raisins, earthy hops and sweet caramell. Flavour has the same with a extra touch of liqourice and leather. Very candylike, fairly complex, extremely well composed brew that satisfies when you want a real slow sipper.

Pours out dark copper with light foam. Taste is sweet and malty. Toffee, caramel, and honey. Piney hoppy finish with some alcohol warming. Spicy, fruity sweet syrup. A full flavor brew, complex.

Re-rate. I used to not like barleywines, I had trouble with the huge malty body that most of them have. It was just too much for me. I rated this one pretty badly at the time when I first had it, and upon looking back I honestly have no idea what the f*ck I was thinking. I know that I tried to like it since I’d heard so much about how great HOTD is. I just didn’t get it I guess, because this is just a fantastic beer. The great caramelly malt body (which is a little much, bordering on cloying, but it works) is counter-balanced wonderfully by a perfect amount of resinous hop flavor and bitterness. I’ll have to go get more of this before it disappears off the shelves this xmas. Cheers Alan and thanks for another great beer.
