| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Aug 6, 2008 2008 Bottle. Pours with a cloudy amber boody and a small, off-white head. Aroma is sweet and sharp with caramel, prunes, wood, tobbacco, vanilla and alcohol. Taste is hot but smooth with tobacco, caramel and wood. A really nice, strong beer. Would love a bottle to age for 2-3 years. Syrupy and mouthcoating, light bubbles. JCB (1796), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 2/5 | 18/20 | Aug 3, 2008 12oz bottle from Liquid Solutions, Batch 64. Holy shit, what a beer. It’s been about a year since I cracked one of these and I thought I’d do it up for rating #900. The molasses and tobacco notes from the nose are just exceptional, so inviting. A vibrant color on the pour (surprisingly still quite lively and carbonated), deep copper/russet with some mild cloudiness. Fruity tang is still in there, along with some stubborn hops. This is not your usual syrupy oak-aged beer but a mellowed, almost scotch-like beverage that has a pugnacious complexity and a long, elegant finish. So good. chicagodri (1072), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 3, 2008 Pours a copper color with a thick off white head. Nice aroma of caramel, hops, and a little alcohol. For a 10% beer it is amazingly smooth. This is a great beer...I need to get some more.
Nice oak flavor. Actually quite amazing. I had Hair of the Dog Fred earlier tonight, so maybe also having this beer was a little aggressive, but they were both so good. Glad it comes in 12oz bottles. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 31, 2008 Bottle in trade from ditmier. Thanks!
Pours a rich amber-orangish-brown with a short lived beige head. Smell is sweet, creamy, rich malt and is nice and oaky and bourbony with vanilla. Very nice nose. Taste is very oaky and dry with a strong lasting oaky finish. Malt and bourbon and vanilla as well along with light but prickly carbonation and a medium to rich body. Oaky finish is a bit much actually and dries it out a touch more than I’d like. Still pretty nice. 17thfloor (1507), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Huge pineapple and ambrosia aroma, some sweet malt. First taste is sugary sweet like biting into a juicy piece of pineapple. A little bit toasty and some coconut. Bitter woody cheesy aftertaste, really has that taste of cognac barrels. Sugary mouthful, not syrupy but quite viscous with fluffy but smooth carbonation, pretty juicy. Glad I have more bottles to age properly...[this sweet pineapple taste was in my mouth the entire next day =) ] Gooney (63), Oregon, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 27, 2008 12 oz bottle from the brewery dock sales - Pours a nice tan color. With just a glance, it looks a bit like a premium lager, but the taste is certainly not! It is a fairly complex flavor, with hints of a red wine (probably from the oak barrel). I think I may have saved it a bit too long to drink it, but it is still a very nice beer. However, at $7 a bottle, I’ll wait to buy another one until there is a very special occasion. It turns out that barrel-aged barley wines are tasty, I liked this one a lot. Lots of bourbon notes with the malty sweetness of the barley wine still very evident. darkguardian (506), Florida, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jul 26, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a burnt orange. With a nice sized off white head. Thick and foamy and lasts a long damn time. Distinct hop aroma with woody caramel notes, bit of tobacco in there also. Flavor profile is incredibly complex. I don’t normally like American Barley Wines but this is just too well crafted to fault. Up front there is some tobacco and smoke with a very strong hop bite. The back end of this beer is very malty and sweet and completely balances out the considerable hopiness. Incredibly well done. Lingering finish is full of oaky goodness. Vanilla and cherry also come out as the beer warms. This is a real worldclass barley wine from Alan, and if you like American Barley Wines this is about as good as they get.
