Thick and foamy and lasts a long damn time. Distinct hop aroma with woody caramel notes, bit of tobacco in there also. Flavor profile is incredibly complex. I don’t normally like American Barley Wines but this is just too well crafted to fault. Up front there is some tobacco and smoke with a very strong hop bite. The back end of this beer is very malty and sweet and completely balances out the considerable hopiness. Incredibly well done. Lingering finish is full of oaky goodness. Vanilla and cherry also come out as the beer warms. This is a real worldclass barley wine from Alan, and if you like American Barley Wines this is about as good as they get. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 14, 2008 Pours a hazy rich amber color. The aroma is absolutely amazing. Notes of vanilla, caramel, treacle, toasted nuts, a great undernote of hops. I cannot quit nosing this beauty. The flavor is everything I crave in a barleywine. Very malt dominant, but again, the subtle hop notes seem to bring everything back into focus. The flavor is as expansive as the aroma and lasts for what seems like an eternity. The malts, the wood and the hops have seemingly combined into what can only be described as an opus magnus. Stunning beer. greenhorn1 (462), Mission Viejo, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Jul 11, 2008 12 oz bottle from BottleTrek.com. Wow, where do I begin? A murky brown with a creamy head and medium carbonation. You can instantly smell woodsy, oaky, bourbon, aroma as you pour in your snifter. Flavor has similiar attributes, but because of the complexity, you can detect hints of vanilla, citrus, and I think...could it be...cherries? Chewy mouthfeel with a ever so slight alcohol warming sensation. It is amazing how pronounced the oak flavors are, which makes this beer special. I wonder if cellared for a few years it would lose some of the oakiness? Probably will not matter because of the complex flavors of this beer. Only time will tell. JMFG (1514), Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jul 5, 2008 Courtesy TheCheeseMan. Lightly hazy amber color with a persistent thin white layer of foam. Rich, sweet caramel malts lay over some hops that are earthy but still have a nice PNW spiciness. Taste is a nice mix of viscous sweetness and earthy hops with a slight tannic note on the finish. Very well balanced and the alcohol never gets in the way. SDalkoholic (1196), Chula Vista, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 28, 2008 Bottle from Joey at South Bay drugs. Poured with a rigorous amount of white fluffy foam as the liquid itself was a glowing orange color full of sediment. Nose is a freshly cut oak aroma and besides that smell, is hard for me to define other than that. Texture is very fine with a creamy smooth palate as the carbonation is very subdued. The flavor is a tangy tasting of spice and fruit with apricot or peach being the obvious example. Also shares some flavors with honey or nectar that is drowned in natural sugars. It leaves behind a slight aftertaste of wood but oddly enough it practically goes unnoticed. Rciesla (3750), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA

Pours a orange body with no head. Aroma and flavor is sweet vanilla, oak and lots of bourbon. The etoh was the perfect start to rehydrating myself after being lost in queens for an hour. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 22, 2008 a strange but enjoyable cheesey aroma, tripple cream perhaps, also vanilla oak and brown sugar. great rich mouth feel and flavor to match the aroma with the wood amplified, complex and engaging. maybe it would be better with age but i would not call it hot, maybe a little warm BuckeyeSammy (456), Cleveland, Ohio, USA

I would love to try this beer gain after letting it cellar for a few years. Very good, but a little too sweet and hot. Also too thick and syrupy. Well now, wasn’t all bad.. On the upside, I enjoyed the woody oak that jumps off your palate. Toffee, maple, sweeeet malt, oak, caramel, vanilla.
