Batch Number 64

4/02/2008: Fred from the Wood pours a cloudy deep golden orange coor with a frothy off-white head. The A aweet, rich, and malty aroma is accompanied by traces of sweet fruits and vanilla. Sweet caramelized malt, vanilla, oak, fruit (caramelized pineapple, aged dried sweet orange citrus, peach), some muted tobacco (just a slight smoky woodiness), and hints of floral hops blend together for form a really complex and delicious flavor. The finish is slightly dry with some spiciness, muted hops, and a lingering dried apricot flavor. Overall this beer is very well-balanced and complex. There is absolutely no alcohol flavor or burn. It has a medium-full body that is quite smooth, mellow, and even somewhat creamy. This is another excellent and expertly crafted brew from Hair of the Dog. In comparison to the regular <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/hair-of-the-dog- Fred from the Wood has a slightly richer maltiness, but is a bit more dry. It also has a really nice strand of vanilla in the aroma and flavor and the hop presence is definitely more muted and subdued (okay with my for this beer and style!). This is an impressive beer that is simply delicious!

12 fluid ounce bottle (Alcohol Content 10% by Volume) from illinismitty and jimbowood through trades in late 2006. Thanks Sean and Jimbo! I appreciate it. Rating #292 for this beer...

Bottle at how many guyz do you need to have a train tasting. Alround rating: Who knows why you would ruin what is one of the most heavily hopped barley wines known to man, by barrel aging it to death. Ruined hoppy beast, its now sour and woody and has to attractive features whatsoever. Hard to believe this is my favourate barley wine.

Bottle at Magic_dave6’s disco dance tasting. Hazy chestnut, some fading bubbly white head. Nose is vanilla, woody malt, some hops and some malt. Slightly sour. Mouth is sweet chocolate, some alcoholic burn. Alright, but massively overpowering with vanilla. Why does this need to be wooded?

Thanks to Brian for this one. 2007 bottle. Amber body, no head. Aroma of nutmeg, oak, and caramel. Flavors of spices, caramel, bourbon, and bitterness in the finish. Slightly thin body.

Amber color with a white head and bits of lacing. Head quickly recedes to a ring around the glass. Hoppy aroma, like a mixture of pineapple and pickles (strangely); there is also a little bit of oak. Woody taste with sweet caramel that comes through before a pineapple finish. Medium carbonation and body. This was Batch 64. Pretty good, but I wouldn’t go nuts about it.

Batch 64. Orangish color with huge beige head. Grows a few legs, some spotty lacing. Aroma nice combo of mellow oak tannins, vanilla, honey, and huge malt bill. Flavor much the same. Caramel and toffee up front, oak, vanilla, and honey fade in and out. Some citrus zest in the finish. Silky mouthfeel. In my imagination, this is perfect, next to the fire with a good book.

Had it on tap at Brouwers Big Wood fes. tWow! Now tihs is complex beer. Not your run of the mill barley wine, if they did not classify it as a barley wine I wouldn’t guess it. There are so many flavors that twist about in your mouth it is very hard to describe. Pours dark orangish with a unrecognizable nose. This on it woth seeking out!!
