Poured a dark golden brown color out of the bottle. The moment I smelled it I knew this was special. Smell came rising out of the glass, sawdust, some spice, some dark fruit. Taste is all that and more. Nice hop backbone supports a wall of flavor, rum soaked dark fruit, spice, burnt wood, tobacco, and a slightly buttery smooth finish. It all comes together so well. Excellent brew.

[420-20070711] 12floz (Batch #64, w/ jerc). Very strange heavy yeast aroma, pancake flour with a woody base and a touch of sweet floral. Hazy, brown body with a long-lasting bubbly off-white head. Initial kick of alcohol, sweet resin and a hidden hoppy base, aftertaste is sweet brandy-soaked currants. Full body is initially dry, bitter middle. Nice for the category though a little too sweet.

Batch 64 bottle, with a big thanks to Dorwart for this bonus, pours a clear dark honey color with a moderate creamy off-white head, great lacing. Lively fruity aroma of pear, apple, apricot, plums, and light oak and vanilla; very reminiscent of a chardonnay in some ways. Flavor continues with some chardonnay qualities, delivering nicely on the aroma while providing a gentle warming. Medium carbonation, full and buttery mouthfeel, nice on the palate. This is quite a divergence from what I was expecting, and a good one for sure. Once again, HotD hits me out of left field and shakes up my expectations of what beer should be, showing me how diverse, creative and excellent being different can be. Woof!

Bottle. Batch #64 Murky tawny brown body, smallish dense creamy beige head. 3+ Strong woody notes in the aroma over a familiar but undefinable fruit notes, brief incongruous hints of baking flour. Flavour is bitter, but not overly so. Rich supporting malt is fairly straightforward, but has fleeting streaks of caramel, and the characteristic tangy hoppy malt of the underlying Fred. Hints at a rich warming character of brandy occassionally. Wood plays a relatively minor accent role which I like - subtlety and poise rather than the in your face bombasity of many beers aged in wood. Smooth medium palate is appropriate. This is quite nice, but the alcohol comes out as the glass goes on, so a bottle to yourself might be a bit much.

Batch 64. Many thanks to MrBendo for trading this to me. I think somebody else also gave me one but I cannot remember who it was. (I think it was Styles). This gem pours a darkish hazy copper with a small but lasting white head. Also leaves some major lacing. The aroma is out of this world. BIg fermented fruits (apricot & prune), woody malts, and a good amount of alcohol. The flavor is a kick in the ass as well. Ripened fruits, oak, light smoke, rich malts and barley. Body is thick and rich with a full bitter finish.

Poured amber with off white head. Aroma of alcohol with hints of sweet malt trying to come through. Flavor was big on alcohol with sweet notes, fruit, and toffee in the background.

12 oz bottle. Pours a muddy honey brown with a medium beige head. Unfiltered with lots of hops floating around. Aroma of oak barrels, vanilla, honey, and alcohol. Taste is a complex combination of oaked wood, sourness, vanilla, caramel, toffee with a slight funky finish. Excellent.

12oz. Bottle (thanks glkaiser): Heavily sweet aroma smells of apples, honey, alcohol, oak and wood. Poured copper in color with a hint of amber, and a big, creamy, off-white head that lasted throughout. Great lacing. Very cloudy. Lots of particles. Very nice looking beer. Medium sweet flavor. Tastes of oak, wood, alcohol, malts, a little dark fruit, and herbal hops. Full body. Thick, creamy texture. Soft carbonation. Long, oaky, alcohol finish. Overall, a different barley wine that is like drinking an wood.
