12oz. Bottle (thanks glkaiser): Heavily sweet aroma smells of apples, honey, alcohol, oak and wood. Poured copper in color with a hint of amber, and a big, creamy, off-white head that lasted throughout. Great lacing. Very cloudy. Lots of particles. Very nice looking beer. Medium sweet flavor. Tastes of oak, wood, alcohol, malts, a little dark fruit, and herbal hops. Full body. Thick, creamy texture. Soft carbonation. Long, oaky, alcohol finish. Overall, a different barley wine that is like drinking an wood.

12 oz bottle shared with willblake. Poured a very nice looking orangey/amber with a small off white head. Aroma is nice and complex with notes of wood, sour fruit and a good protion of funkiness. Very smooth mouthfeel especailly for a 10%er. Flavor isn’t as sour as the aroma but the woodiness holds up strongly. I found this so much more enjoyable then the regualr Fred.

(Bottle (Batch 64) via trade with <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=2 target=blank>CaptainCougar, thanks Tom!) Oakey vanilla sweetness...Pours cloudy orange/amber with 1/2" of light amber head. Aroma of oak, vanilla, pine and candyish malt. Mouthfeel fairly soft, medium-full, quite smooth, sticky. Nice thin weepy rings of lacing. Taste is oakey and sweet with medium pine bitterness overlaying. Vanilla, toffee and light rock candy. Oak is quite predominant but not overpowering. A little hot but not too bad. Nice indeed but not quite as tasty as HOTD Fred regular IMO. Cellaring this might have been a good option.

12 oz bottle, Batch 64. Hazed honey brown with pink edges. Creamy white head; quite active for a barleywine. Caramel, toffee, light citrus and oak. Pine is dominant in the taste but not sharp. More toffee and muted wood. Certainly smoother than regular Fred but seems to have lost some maltiness. Substantial body with minimal carb.

Bottle. Pours a hazy copper with an off-white head. Oaky aroma with some fruit notes. Full body and medium carbonation. The taste has fig and peach along with a shot of vanilla and wood from the oak. Dry oaky finish. Reading this, it sounds like the beer is an oak bomb, but instead it is nicely balanced brew with oaky notes throughout.

12oz Bottle 2007 edition
A deep amber color with an aroma of deep wood and smokiness. Very deep malts and a good amount of alcohol. This was a great end of the evening brew. Do not try to do too much this will catch you in the end. A deep flavor with smokiness, eath flavors and the wood is for sure in this beer. I am going to sit on some to see how it flavors with age. Great Beer.

12-oz. Pours deep murky coppery amber. Some thick white moussy film. Enormous nose of plums, oranges, and other dark fruit. Bold, stinging, carbonated attack (somewhat unusual given the BA). Super complex thick and oily mid-palate carrying fruits, vanilla, and no shortage whatsoever of oak. Incredibly dense orange pith flavors, especially in the clingy finish.
