Bottle. Aromas are dominated by wood and leather and somehow it reminded me of my old math library at the University of Goettingen? Flavors are great, the sweetness that is perhaps too present in the regular Fred ids offset by this oaky, woodsy flavor. The alcohol is hidden very well and the beer goes down very smoothly.

Very Fred in aroma, initial taste and middle taste. More oaky in initial aroma and flavor than fred. Same neutral honey middle. Understated oaky honey finish. Overall very tasty and smoother tasting but less complex than lesser brethren. Preferred. In interest of complexity I would go with Fred. In interest of taste, Fred of the wood. Fred of the wood is overall a better tasting smoother beer.

12 oz bottle. Clear gold pour, slightly orange tinge, thin white head. Caramel malt, sweet fruit, raisin, vanilla, oak, and some musty malts. Hints of tabacco and cherries. Some alcohol pressence. Complex and really tasty, I am not to much in the mood for it though, it’s hot in here haha (and just got warmer).

Bottle courtesy of Sparky27. Wow. Poured a hazy copper color with a thin off-white head. Huge sheets of lace left on the glass. Aroma is boozy caramel, oak, rasin, and phenols. Full bodied with lots of tongue prickling alcohol and a smooth, almost oily, rounded mouthfeel. Carbonation is lively. Sweet alcoholic flavor with lots of wood notes, dark fruit, tobacco, and vanilla. Finishes hoppy with lots of warming alcohol. Excellent!

2008 bottle. Pours a hazy, dark orange body topped by a small, foamy white head that settles to a thin film. The aroma is nice and shows hints of sweet fruits, toasted caramel, toffee, wood, and vanilla. The flavor shows more of the same with sweet, dark fruits, caramel, and wood. Some cherries start to push through along with some vanilla cream. Some citrusy hops add just enough bitterness on the backend. Medium-full bodied and very smooth with a lengthy sweet finish and a touch of heat. Really nice stuff here. HOTD never seems to fail.

12 oz Bottle ,thanks to kosko20 . A nice muddy golden orange color body, with a huge foamy off white head that lasts for ever, medium carbonation, tuns of lacing and sheeting. Aroma if lots of oak , sweet malt, tobacco ,and apple skins . Favor is out of this world Huge caamel malt , sweet cherry, vanilla, honey ,nuts and hint of alcohol , sticky mouthfeel but the carbonation seems to clean the palate between sips, Full body , balenced , very complex and everchanging flavors and aromas . Probably the best beer I have had to date.

Bottle thanks to Cletus. Rating number 600. Shared this with my dad on father’s day. Pours a hazy brown with a large white head. Big caramel, malt, vanilla, and a touch of smoke and wood, with a touch of alcohol. Medium to thick body. Very deep dark fruit, plums and prunes, Finishes with a nice light bitterness and some dry wood notes. Pretty well balanced. I’m still not a huge barley wine fan, but this one is pretty decent. Sadly, no one else liked it. Oh well, more for me.
