Tasted @ Hair of the Dog Brewing Company in Portland.
Copper, amber colored brew. Very nice roasted, sweet malty aroma with some spices. Flavor is interesting, sweet roasted malts and nice hopbitterness. Very balanced and smooth.

[1530-20080712] 12floz bottle. Caramelized sweet roasted leafy wood aroma has some smoky malt and meat steak hints. Murky, medium amber brown body with a small quick foamy almond head and lots of floaties. Sweet roasted malt flavour is alcoholic (in a good way) with malty heavy hops. Full body is smooth. Quaffable, quite nice.

Bottle at home ... copper ... sweet vanilla little wood nose ... bit fizzy rich toffee ... quite a lot of alcohol... almost some whisey ... just a bit too rough round the edges for me.

batch 68 bottle by way of SamuraiArtist (still one of my favorite screen names)... pours a muddy iced tea color with a good two inches of wispy almond hued foam and lots of spotty lacing. aroma is without a doubt freshly micro planed orange zest along with caramel, wood, vanilla, tingly pine, alcohol and spice. the flavor doesn’t make me think ’barley wine’... it’s quite spicy, hoppy and piney with a ton of orange zest and juice. it’s got a very low level of sweetness and notes of spice and welcome alcohol before a bitter-ish finish. lots of clove noticed in the aftertaste along with alcohol vapors which leak out of me. this doesn’t really detract from the big picture.. actually the alcohol adds spice and warmth. medium body is so soft and velvety smooth.... it’s seems a bit light considering the abv%...

Nice enticing aroma of candy sugar, bready malts, dark fruits and alcohol. The appearance is a reddish gold color. The flavor is sweet, moderate candy sugar, rye, and hops. The finish is a nicely crafted mixture of bittering hops and lingering sugar. On the thick and oily side. Definitely a nice example of the classic barley wine, sweet and alcoholic, with a slight (and not overpowering) sprinkling of hops.

Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of light bread, cereal and caramel, moderate pine and light orange for the hops, moderate dough for the yeast, with notes of date, wine, toffee, and dried cherry. Head is small, creamy, slightly off-white, with virtually no lacing, but it did coat the glass quite well. Color is hazy orange. Flavor starts moderately sweet and acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and moderately acidic and bitter. Palate is medium to full, oily, and has a soft carbonation. It finishes moderately astringent and sticky. Bold aromas and flavors set this beer apart from most other Barly wines. It definitely needs to warm above refidgerator temperature though.

12oz Bottle: Pours clear amber w/ a huge off-white head that leaves a nice bit of lacing behind. First sniff: alcohol. Back for sniff two...Rye bread. Flavor has sweet candy sugar & an alcohol burn. Almost syrupy mouthfeel. Sweet finish lingers forever. Good stuff.

Pours a cloudy pale orange with a huge frothy off white head. Aroma is medium sweet with light caramel and citrus as well as a bit resiny. Flavor is big with a good deal of caramel malt and piney hops. Finishes long and sticky with a slight alcohol burn. Medium bodied, smooth texture.
