BMan1113VR (591), Los Angeles (and Dallas, TX), California, USA May 14, 2008 Batch 70. I really enjoyed this one, not a typical barley wine. Pours with a creamy, off-white head covering a hazy, darkish, orange-brown body. Aroma of figs, spiciness, sugar, mandarin citrus, alcohol and perfume. Taste is of sweet fruits, savory, then caramel everywhere. Great strong alcohol presence in the taste throughout, which I like a lot. Creamy mouthfeel, perfrect level of carbonation, with some warming on the finish. Great beer by Hair of the Dog.
Aquilo (136), California, USA Jul 7, 2008 I opened the beer and went to sniff the bottle, and I got shot in the nose with beer foam! Either someone shook my beer, or this one has a phenomenal head. There is more foam than beer in my glass right now, and I have been waiting for it to settle for several minutes. I see from past reviews that the amount of head is extremely variable. Interresting.
Smell is green apples, barley, nectarines, and a touch of cinnamon. Flavor is sweet and creamy necter. Peaches, honey, nutmeg, cloves, and ceylon cinnamon. Medium bodied and velvety smooth. Just about perfect. This may be the champagne of the beer world. Sparky27 (388), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jul 4, 2008 Bottle - batch 72. Pours a cloudy burnt orange with almost no head sans for a ring around the glass. Nose is raisins, plums, caramelized brown sugar and alcohol. Taste is toffee, sweet brown sugar, nuts and earthy herbal notes with a slight bitter finish. Very warming brew – doesn’t hide the alcohol very well in spite of its sweetness. Full mouth feel and a bit sticky on the lips. Very good. Beerman6686 (510), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 2, 2008 Poured a nice golden yellow color with a nice fluffy white head. Aroma was of some spices, and hops. Flavor was extremely smooth somewhat with a belgian candy sugar flavor but with a nice hoppy bitter finish. alafito (323), tijuana, Mexico Jul 1, 2008 Its says "GOLDEN ALE", and it says "made in the Belgium tradition". And now i see its a barleywine. It doesnt really know what it is.
Pours flat with a nice fruity and vanilla nose. Tastes sugary, with cherries, plums and oranges. Palate is super sweet with a big alcohol burn. Finish is herbal and spicey with more alcohol. jcwattsrugger (3733), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jun 30, 2008 12oz bottle @Joe’s NYC Gathering shared by idrinkale–pours a light tan ring with cloudy copper color. Aroma is alcohol, bourbon/oak, dark fruit-plum, sweet. Taste is bourbon/oak, dark fruit-plum, sweet, much less alcohol than expected from the aroma, cherry/herbal.
