Commercial Description:
Rose is named for Portland, Oregon, the Rose City. Originally called Golden Rose, this Beer started life as a straight forward Belgian Tripel and evolved into a Beer made with beets, hibiscus flowers and pink peppercorns. She has always been inspired by the Belgian style known as Tripel, which has a low level hops and is deceivingly light in body for its alcohol strength. This is achieved through the use of imported Belgian candi sugar. Not Brewed since 2005.

Batch 40. A blushing reddish pink hue with a decent white head. Really very pretty, but doesn’t quite look like a beer. The nose is a bit unusual too. I first notice a dry peppery note with some rosey floral bits too. This bears a better resemblance to tea than beer. The mouthfeel is kind of plain with low carbonation, but a thin mouthfeel as well. The flavors are slightly better than the nose. Again, very strong floral rosey flavors, more akin to a tea. That pink pepper corn really comes through too. A little grassy, with just some touches of fruit. Not a huge fan, but I can respect the complexity. The finish is very dry. The finish is very very floral, almost astringently so, and the aftertaste is almost a little piney... perhaps infection sort of piney. I wonder about this bottle, yet I didn’t enjoy it at all so I’m tempted not to get it should I see it again. What a bummer from my favorite brewery!

Bottle: Poured a medium hazy amber color ale with a medium foamy head with below average retention. Aroma consists of sweet malt with some very subtle yeast characteristics and some spiciness. Taste is dominated by a cloying sweetness which is rather unspectacular with some spices. Body is fuller then average with some low carbonation which doesn’t benefit for the style. Overall, I thought this was a rather unspectacular take on a style that I usually enjoy a great deal.

12 oz. bottle Batch 41 via trade with IrishBoy - Pours a very slightly hazy amber color with a 1/2 finger thick off white head. Light lacing. Has a light yeast and vegetable aroma (green bean). Wierd. Flavor is honey sweet. I just can’t pin this beer down. Not like any Tripel I’ve had before. Medium body. Smooth. Not bad, worth a try. Thanks Richard.

Bottle. The name of the beer says it all- rosey, flowery flavor and aroma dominate. Honey and fruit undertones. Very smooth and sweet.

12 oz bottle batch 40, via trade with Tever. Pours cloudy brownish orange, and it initially had a nice white head that quickly receded into a ring. Nose is floral, slightly sweet. The brew has a nice enough mouth feeling, but the taste is sort of all over the place. The taste is lightly fruity, but that great. Although I thought I might be dissapointed with this brew I wanted to taste for myself. I guees HotD should stick to Barley Wine and Traditional Ales. Thanks Tom.

I was indeed disappointed the aroma and the thick, rich mouthfeel were the highest notes of this beer. Either my bottle was bad or this was just over the top, and strange. Too much charcoal/tar/peat flavor, very very smoky. Somewhere in the faint headwaters where this beer started is the familiar tasted of belgian tripel, but it is overpowered by everything else.
