Commercial Description:
Rose is named for Portland, Oregon, the Rose City. Originally called Golden Rose, this Beer started life as a straight forward Belgian Tripel and evolved into a Beer made with beets, hibiscus flowers and pink peppercorns. She has always been inspired by the Belgian style known as Tripel, which has a low level hops and is deceivingly light in body for its alcohol strength. This is achieved through the use of imported Belgian candi sugar. Not Brewed since 2005.

Bottle, poured a nice copper color with a thin head. Malty aroma with a slightly floral undetone. Flavor...errr....this is where it went bad. Medicinal and toothpastey. The flower taste is just too...off. I don’t really know how to describe it. I can see others enjoying this and i would recommend everybody at least try, but its not my cup-o-tea, so I am one and done.

[Bottle, January 2007] Pours leather brown with quickly dissipating head. Aroma is floral and slight fruit. Taste is flowery with a lot more banana than is evident in the aroma. Finish is heavily banana with slight rose petals. Mouthfeel is nice. Flavors may not be my thing but they distract from the alcohol nicely.

Pours a cloudy medium amber with a soda-pop-like head. Aroma is intensely vegetal. I don’t know if this beer sat too long, though with all the yeast, I doubt that would be a problem. I didn’t get any sweet, floral or fruity notes, just overpowing burnt cabbage. After a few whifs, it made me nauseated. The flavor was more balanced, I could pick up the sweetness/floral/fruity notes, but it still was hard to drink. I guess it just wasn’t my thing.

12 oz bottle. Pours a nice amber with a rose hue. Small head that dissipates quickly and medium to high carbonation. Fruity, floral and spicey nose. Flavor is similiar, with addition of grapefruit, sweet malt. Dry aftertaste. Not a bad beer, just a bit confused with Rose and I expected something better from HOTD.

I purposely stirred up the yeast at the bottom of the bottle and dumped it in. The beer pours a reddish brown, cloudy, with a good inch of creamy tan foam. Good lacing. Nice fruity aroma with a slight scent of dark honey. Powerfully sweet, full of honey, brown sugar, and mild caramel. The malt endures forever even as it blends with some tangy and spicy hops. Fruity in the finish and full of molasses, wheat bread, and mild plum. Full bodied and softly carbonated. Alcohol like a plum wine in the finish.

Sweet malt. Orange flavor. Slightly caramelized orange. A bit flowery. Maybe some hops? but not much if any. Really not a lot of flavor at all. Not bad, but nothing exciting. Nothing like any tripel I’ve ever had. I guess a bit of cherry. OK, there’s some of the belgian tripel yeast character, but not a ton.
