Commercial Description:
Rose is named for Portland, Oregon, the Rose City. Originally called Golden Rose, this Beer started life as a straight forward Belgian Tripel and evolved into a Beer made with beets, hibiscus flowers and pink peppercorns. She has always been inspired by the Belgian style known as Tripel, which has a low level hops and is deceivingly light in body for its alcohol strength. This is achieved through the use of imported Belgian candi sugar. Not Brewed since 2005.

Sour fruit (berry?) nose, rosey coloured, pours a small tan head. Taste is bitter pitfruit. Sweet, sour, bitter and quite dry. Really interesting.

Bottle at Volo (thanks for bringing these in Ralph). Dark amber/orange, small white head. Fruity, veggie aroma, some hops - interesting and nice. Taste is along the same lines - there is a certain vegginess with this, mixed with a Belgian type strong ale, and also a good bit of alcohol. At first I wasn’t sure what to make f it, but after a few sips I began to really enjoy it. Deceivingly strong (as my almost incoherent notes would seem to indicate) this is a nice end of the night sipper. While nowhere in the league of the Adam or Fred, I found myself enjoying all 4 of these Hair of the Dogs that have been recently made available to us in Toronto at Volo. A very interesting brewery!

It’s cute to add candied sugar to the beer. Very gimmicky. A basic beer otherwise. There is nothing special about this beer bsesides the candied sugar. Poor head, poor visuals.

Bottle from Issac newton’s. Pours hazy golden with a minimal white head. Aroma of alcohol, yeast, citrus, belgian spices, and sweet malts. Flavor is sweet, alcohol is present, spicey, and citrusy. Good body, great brew.

Two bottles at Volo shared with DougShoemaker, mds & mustang3. Hazy orange-pink body with a small pinkish head. Aroma is tart, herbal & flowery, with some sour yeast notes. Flavour is very interesting - there’s a hint of beets in there, with a mild sourness, and some earthy notes. Very odd at first, but it’s a real grower.

bottle. hazy white-yellow body with a small white head. the aroma is quite nice and interesting - notes of cereal, pear, yeast, banana, and candy. very bready flavour with plenty of fruit and spice and finishing with lemony tartness. soft carbonation. maybe not a traditional Tripel but it’s still interesting!

Pours a ruby amber with a fizy pinkish head that is gone in a flash. Nose is bright and floral with plenty of fruity and yeasty notes. Flavor is very earthy and organic with bold notes of grass and beets. Weird and worth a try, but beyond that, not so much.

12oz. bottle Batch 39. Clear orange color with a small white head. Fruity, yeasty aroma with some black pepper and honey. On first sip, the flavor that hit me first was dirt. I thought it was me, so I asked my wife’s opinion. She too thought it had a dirt-like flavor. After reading some of the other reviews I feel better knowing I’m not crazy. Besides the dirt, which was hard to get past, I could taste some honey, pepper and a bit of peach. Alcohol comes on at the end, but is still pretty mild. Some astringency and aggressive carbonation takes away from the mouthfeel.
