chimay chalice- murky orange/ light pink. smell- cherries and yeast. heavy mouth feel for a triple. tastes like yeast and week and a half old leftover vegetables from thanksgiving. Looks good, smells ok, tastes ok. Hair of the Dog is a great brewery, but I just didn’t understand what could be desirable about this beer.

Not what I was expecting from the abbey tripel. Not the best example of the style. But it’s crisp and there’s a freshness to it, much ado of the pine I suspect. I was expecting something a little more enthusiastic I guess.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry at Bar Volo. Pours a cloudy, very bubbly, dark pink-ruby with an average size lasting off-white head. It’s pretty rare I give something a 5 for appearance but this looked great. Aroma of perfumy flowers, pepper, malt and...beets? I think it’s beets. Flavour is mildly sour with some metal, spices, fruit, beets again and some light hops -- this is a hard one to describe, I’m not crazy about that flavour. The alcohol is pretty well hidden. Medium bodied. I think this is definitely an acquired taste, I wasn’t too crazy about it. Beets?

Poured glowing orange with a white head. Quite a bit of bubbles. Aroma is sweet and fruity. Flavor is dirt, nuts, and some spice. Kind of a earthy chocolate comes through. Some dough and brown sugar. An odd beer with the aroma and flavor not matching. Thick mouthfeel.

Bottle (12oz). At Volo - yay! - shared with blankboy. Poured bubbly clear rose with a large lasting fizzy-foamy-creamy pinkish white head. Sweet dusty aroma of wild flowers, fresh-cut garden herbs, dirt (I assume this is the beetroot, which always tastes like friggin’ dirt to me) - very herbal and dry. Also tastes quite herbal, and ferric (metallic - also beets?), with a fair amount of lightly sour zinfandel wine and mild hops - quite a light mouthfeel, not very carbonated despite the appearance. Overall this is an oddball - very floral, with a longish herbal-bitter finish and some sourness - I don’t see how this is a "tripel" - a spice/herbal/vegetable perhaps, but not a tripel.

(03.01.06) 12 oz bottle purchased from Liquidsolutions.com. 7.5% ABV. Batch 40. Pours hazy red with small white head. Soft carbonation. Fruity/vegetal nose. Medium bodied Belgium tripel style ale that starts with light sweet malt and earthy/vegetal (beets?)/sour/fruity (raspberry?)/spicy flavors. Some medicinal phenols detected. Some sharpness in the mouth. Finishes dry with sour spicy fade. Some alchohol warmth. Good drinkable tripel ale but not one of my favorites because I did not care for the beet vegetable smell and flavor in beer.

Poured a dull, dark yellow with a great, persistant head. Aroma was very slight, with flowers, boiled rice, brown sugar, fresh dough. Flavor is nice and soft, brown sugary, though palate has a nasty biting sting and lots more alcohol presenance that 7.5% indicates. Still, a nice beer that gains complexity as it warms.

From bottle. Pours a cloudy dull orange with a HUGE frothy head. Nose is floral with honey and yeast present. Flavor has a candied sweetness that finishes bitter and dry.
