Commercial Description:
Rose is named for Portland, Oregon, the Rose City. Originally called Golden Rose, this Beer started life as a straight forward Belgian Tripel and evolved into a Beer made with beets, hibiscus flowers and pink peppercorns. She has always been inspired by the Belgian style known as Tripel, which has a low level hops and is deceivingly light in body for its alcohol strength. This is achieved through the use of imported Belgian candi sugar. Not Brewed since 2005.

Batch 36 - Pours Amber.. very cloudy and tons of seamonkeys floating and dancing in it.... Amazing offwhite big bubbled head though threatened to overblow the glass many times. Aroma is of deep malts and some yeast comes through as well with just a touch of raisin. Flavor is very carbonated notes of apple, grapes, malts and maybe even a touch of cherry back there. Very fruity. Some honey sweetness also comes through at the end just before the alcohol burn that reminds me of why I was so fond of her brother Adam. On the palate this is sticky sweet and coats the mouth with a thick syrupy unique flavor with hints of vanilla and lots of yeast.. It finishes very dry and alcoholic though. Overall pretty tasty and a great nightcap... #200 will be tomorrow!

Pours with a one-finger off-white head, fades slowly and leaves some lace. Cloudy amber color. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Nose is malty. Starts with a semi-sweet raisin flavor but the alcohol is there, mellow finish. $4.35 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

Batch 20, Golden Rose

Nothing "golden" about this... rather a dense, cidery brown with suspended proteins and huge <a href=http://www.workinlate.com/images/beer/HODrose chunks on the bottom of the glass. Yummy. Another Dog with absolutely no head. Very sweet, chewy aromas with orange, honey, prune, roasted barley and mild coffee underneath it all. Pronounced malt flavor was at once heavily sweet and lightly bitter (like cutting your coffee with several heapings of sugar and an ounce or two of honey). Remained sweet and warm with some citrus in a syrupy finish.

I just had a few good Belgian tripels and if that’s what Hair o’ Dog was going for, they failed, instead producing a nice barleywine or possibly an o.k. Belgian strong ale.

Golden Rose on my 12oz bottle. Batch 32. Served at 44.5°, after a few minutes out of the fridge, in my NB worthy glass. Pours reddish orange with virtually no head and some small sediment mixed with some HUGE sediment. The aroma is very sweet and fragrant, it smells more like a barleywine than a tripel. The nose is pure wildflower honey with a touch of yeast? The taste is very sweet initially, with a fruity/floral flavor (from the hops), then an abrupt turn towards a mild sour halfway through, that ends very dry and almost puckering. The beer is complex at each stage. Very full at first and astringent at the finish, with a bit of the alcohol making it’s presence known. It is good and I’m glad I tried it, but the transition from sweet to not is a bit abrupt for me, but I didn’t take any points away for that. A better beer at 55°.

Batch 35: thanks to Wolhfs. Pours hazy golden amber with lots of head that lasts the whole beer. Aroma is yeasty banana with spice. Flavor has lots of sugar through and through with some spice and maybe smoke. Very nice overall.

Bottle: Batch 35. Aroma of fruit, banana, yeast, and light spice. Pours a very hazy orange with lots of fine sediment. Has a big white head with good retention. Real sugary sweet up front. LIghtly yeasty with a citrus and light spice finish. Light hops are barely noticeable. Banana lingers a little in the background. Moderately acidic. Good but not great. Thanks to wolhfs for picking this up.

1.5L bottle from brewery. Batch #39. Aroma is apple cider, other fruits, some spiciness. Bottle says 6%, not 8%. Feels like it might actually be closer to 8, but who knows. Medium bodied. Slightly cloudy amber, a little tint of red...lacing down the glass, with not a ton of head. Flavor is malty with a little acridity (what is roast doing here?) and a very pleasantly dry finish.
