Commercial Description:
Rose is named for Portland, Oregon, the Rose City. Originally called Golden Rose, this Beer started life as a straight forward Belgian Tripel and evolved into a Beer made with beets, hibiscus flowers and pink peppercorns. She has always been inspired by the Belgian style known as Tripel, which has a low level hops and is deceivingly light in body for its alcohol strength. This is achieved through the use of imported Belgian candi sugar. Not Brewed since 2005.

Batch #38. Pours a nice golden colour with a thick white head. The nose on this is terrific. Aromas of apples, honey, belgan yeast, floral notes. The mouthfeel was thick and lingering with notes of malts, belgian yeast, and honey in the flavour and contrary to the commercial description I tasted a med. hops burst in the finish. I’ve had better triples.

Dark orange murky pour with bits of sediment floating about. Thick, sticky white head with lots of lacing. Aroma has elements of chocolate, dates, and molasses. Enticingly sweet flavor with elements of chocolate (odd for a triple) candied sugar and a wee bit of alcohol seeping through in the finish. Thick, chewy mouthfeel, with just the right amount of carbonation - not too bubbly. Excellent tripel - HOD does it again.

Thanks to my non-familial brother Sham up there in Idaho. He sent me this brew something like 6 months ago?

A bright cooked pumpkin colored body and a huge tan colored head fill my snifter! A whiff of bananas, apricots, plums, peaches, golden apples, caramel, honey, toffee, and brown sugar smack my nose! The aroma is very fruity and floral!
The flavor brings cosmic notes of candied sweets. Orange blossom honey, and molasses up front... Tangerines and apple in the middle… then there is a rack of spices in the finish. I note clove, cinnamon, rosemary and basil.. this is really sweet and tasty. There is a bit of musty barnyard veiled in there along with some coriander. It kind of reminded me of rater Mjames homebrew, “coriander mild” that he sent me! Nice yeasty and warming finish…. I’d certainly drink more of this one if were accessible!

Number 500 for me, Batch #37: This bottle was a bit of a gusher. Pours a bright golden orange color with a huge white head. Aroma is yeasty with some peppery spice and some sweet bread. Light sweet candi sugar flavor up front with some doughy malts as well. Hints of passion fruit and peppery yeasty finish with a slight warmth. Very nice.

Batch # 36 poured a hazy golden color with a rocky white head though no retention. Aroma of rose, yeast, citrus fruits, apples earth and spice. Syrupy and sweet initial taste turning to a yeasty dry finish. Soft though rather average mouthfeel.

Batch #38. I was very excited about my first taste of the Hair of the Dog, and if this beer tasted half as good as it looked we’d be in business, but it doesn’t. Pours a cloudy golden colour with an enormous rocky off-white head. Aroma is almost completely overwhelmed by diacetyl butteriness. Underneath that there is apple, peach, and pear fruitiness with a hint of spice. The flavour is also a massive dose of butter. After about 5-10 minutes of swirling to try to get rid of it I still get a muddled mess of flavours, piny hops, some mintiness, light yeastiness, and pale fruity malt. If it wasn’t for the name on the bottle I don’t think I would have even looked for anything nice to say but would have gone straight to the drain with it, which is where it ended up going anyway. Maybe I got a bad bottle.
