after4ever (1756), Brier, Washington, USA Jul 14, 2008 Draft at the brewery. Catching up with my dad for lunch and his final, and tardy, Father’s Day present. Father’s Day was all at brewpubs this year--unlike most families, it takes us more than one occasion to finally get it all out of our system.
Pours grainy, somewhat luminescent dark amber with a thick and creamy tannish head. Big sweet and spicey nose of brown bread, a faint whiff of cookie dough, figs, and pie spices. Creamy body with just a bit of lively carb. Perfect. All the dark malty cereal sweet notes from the nose return for the mid-palate, with appealing pie spice darkening it near the finish. Overall, this is a bit too sweet to be a real delight, and might improve with age. Or just a tweak in recipe. Still, it’s shockingly adventurous and close to the neighborhood, coming from a brewery that’s traditionally known for mild-mannered, straightforward, and accessible interpretations of garden-variety ale styles.

bhensonb (3017), Woodland, California, USA Aug 22, 2008 Bomber from PC Market of Choice in Eugene, OR. Beautiful, clear, mahogany color with a multifinger beige head. Aroma is nutty, yeasty, and hinting of citrus zest. Medium body with smooth, creamy carbonation. Flavor is spice, roasted caramel, and a smidgeon of bitter. Finish is light candi, and it’s more sweet than bitter. Rather silky. It could have been different, but it’s damn good as is.
