Commercial Description:
At Half Pints, we live by our motto: small brewery, BIG FLAVOR. Nothing proves this more than when we brew this extra strong ale. It is packed with five different malts for a strong dried fruit character and is hopped with UK Fuggles and Goldings for a woody, herbal aroma. This Barleywine is meant to be shared fireside with friends. Try it with a cheese plate of sharp Cheddar, Stilton, and Gorgonzola or a slice of rum soaked fruit cake. It will continue to improve with careful aging in a cool dark place, so try to save a bottle to compare with the new vintage. Serve at 12 degrees celcius in a brandy snifter. Unfiltered and unpasteurized. 75 IBUs

Bottled at RBJG. Clear deep amber, brief head. Piney caramel that lasts from nose and on. Near full bodied with lots of toffee and sparkling treacle. Salty finish. Intensive sweetness takes the edge of it for now, would probably do well with some time in the cellar.

Bottle at the Angry Fist of Santa tasting at Chris_o’s. Who decided to start drinking barley wine at 2 in the morning??? Barley wine aroma, sweet malt, lots of hops. Decent American barley wine.

A Mes rate. Bottle at Chris O’s beer exposed tasting.
Awesome colour. A rich dark amber with a good off white head. Treacle malt with some awesome hop balance. Some cheese, plenty of funk along with loads of barley and sugar. Excellent bitter hoppage in the finish. Really good. As a barley wine, it really has the lot. Thanks Harry.

Bottle @ Chris_o’s Pre-Beer Exposed Tasting, September 2008.
Pours impressively red with a small, creamy, off-white, yellowish head. Aroma is powerfully hoppy, vinious and good roasted caramel. Good, oily mouthfeel. Flavour is equally hoppy, soft caramel malts and just a tad too sugary sweet (under the hoppiness).

(22oz bottle) Pours a cloudy amber body with a small creamy yellowish head. Aroma of bread, caramel, and fruitiness. Flavor of hops (citrus), dried dark fruits, and caramel malt with a bitter, dry finish.

My Bottom Line:
Mighty hop resins squeeze out juiciness onto the underfed caramel maltiness of this potent, high-flying, and raw American-style Barley Wine. Definitely in its adolescence for now, it should wisen up and be less aggressive in a year or so.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the hazy amber red.
-Some tropical fruitiness is apparent amidst the aroma,s many hop resins.
-Alcohol heat almost burns in the back.
-The frothy carbonation remains comfortable, and in fact alleviates some of the beer’s rough character.
-It sometimes tastes like English hops taken too far, but it remains a fun Barley Wine experience. Just don’t look for balance.

Bottle; thx Tim!

A lightly hazed dark amber ale with a thick froathy dirty off white head. In aroma, loads of caramel malt, vinous notes, and citrusy floral hops. In mouth, sweet and bitter, there’s enough malt there to support the heavy hops, which are piney and resinous. Rich bodied, yet a bit too agressive. Give it a year and it will be nice. Trade with Piscator32, thanks Kris.
