Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle.
This is an extra stout porter. Unlike many stouts, Nightmare is not harsh or overly bitter. A smooth, massively flavoured creamy drink, best served on the ’warm’ side, allowing full appreciation of this four malt brew. It was runner-up in the ’Stout and Porter’ class at the Great British Beer Festival 1994, Champion Beer at the SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1995 and CHAMPION WINTER BEER OF BRITAIN at the first Great British Winter Beer Festival in Glasgow 1997. Gold Award - ’Stout and Porter’ class SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1999 and 2003.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Dark brown colour, not really black, with brief beige head. Roasted nose, slightly fruity with notes of coffee, liquorice, soy sauce, citrus and a hint of smoke. Roasted taste, slightly smoky, with notes of wet ashes, coffee, chocolate, liquorice and citrussy hops in the finish. Rather dry. Body is slightly thinner than the cask version. Still, this is a very nice porter.

Bottled at Monk’s Café, Stockholm. Clack, beige head. Roasty coffee aroma. Very dry and crisp with evident flavour of freshly ground coffe that lingers all the way through to the finish. A very drinkable, uncomplicated one-flavour beer.

Black with a nice head and notes of chocolate and licorice in the aroma. The mouthfeel is medium. The flavour has a nice bitterness with notes of coffee, licorice and dark chocolate. This night-mare is not nightmare - on the contrary, she is a nice mare, that will be gentle even with new stout-riders :)

Bottle: Black coffee in color, brownish hues, large frothy light beige head, sticky lacing.   Roasted malt nose, although I think the most prominant aspect is a beef bullion like aroma.   Remember those square beef flavored cubes?   Welp, thats what I smell.   Slight lactose like aroma as well.   Meaty, literally, start to this one.   Soft roasted malts, very slight lactose like sweetness, a touch of campfire too.   This one is weird.   Can’t get away from the beef bullion aroma when sipping on it.   Low malt aspect, comes across nearly on the thin side.   It’s English, so I guess that is to be expected.   Hop profile is even more transparent.   Lingering lactose and soft roasted malts.   Tiz okay, but just a little too "beefy" to be tasty.

On tap at Mahars. Poured thin black with no head. Aroma was roasty and sweet. Flavor very balanced and tasty, with tons of roasted bitterness and sugary sweetness.

A simple and enjoyable stout. SImply postum barley, could be roasted chicory, well malted by a variety that takes the edges off sourness and bitterness and makes for a reasonably light satisfying beverage. Thanks Pascoe.

The aroma is one chocolaty and toasty. There is also burnt malt, molasses, and nuts. The appearance is dark brown with a small one finger head. The flavor is like the aroma but with quite a bit of bitterness and some acidity. The palate is smooth with a quick finish. I don’t like this beer. Still the aroma is very good and definitely not a nightmare to drink!

Lightlly "oily" looking pour which releases a darkly roasted sweetness in aroma. The flavor is richly roasted and charcoal-like smokiness, some odd, slightly tart aftertaste following. Licorice , molasses, dark fruits and nuts are all represented. The body is somewhat thin and flat, but all things considered, a pretty decent English porter. Thanks, Carl!
