Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle.
This is an extra stout porter. Unlike many stouts, Nightmare is not harsh or overly bitter. A smooth, massively flavoured creamy drink, best served on the ’warm’ side, allowing full appreciation of this four malt brew. It was runner-up in the ’Stout and Porter’ class at the Great British Beer Festival 1994, Champion Beer at the SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1995 and CHAMPION WINTER BEER OF BRITAIN at the first Great British Winter Beer Festival in Glasgow 1997. Gold Award - ’Stout and Porter’ class SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1999 and 2003.

Bottle: Poured with a huge cascading wall of white foam over a nice dark beer. Big sweet molasses aroma. Lightly bittered this has dark chocolate, a tinge of black coffee, bit of licorice. Good chewy porter.

Bottle. Black with a beige foam. Aromas are light sweet roast malts with liqourice and dark syrup. Flavours are coffee and chocolate malts with burnt toast and liquorice bitterness towards the finish. Quite smoky with a dry finish. Tastes quite traditional.

While many porters have almost no head, this one sports a nice one. The aroma is delightful and features sweet malts. First taste has a nice "grab" to it. This is more substantial than most and is quite creamy and smooth. There is mild bitterness and it remains in an after taste and is in a nice balance with the sweeter malts. Some hops begin to bite about midway through the glass and that increases. This is a delightful offering of a style that can be less than exciting. Nightmare is rich, creamy and full of life.

Half inch thick khaki head with dark brown/black body with ruby red highlights. Has a smell similar to a rootbeer or a black licorice. Tastes rather roasty with sweet malt and licorice notes. Alcohol can also be tasted oddly enough... Medium bodied. Reminds me in many ways of Sam Smith’s Taddy Porter, but fuller bodied and more roasty. Hops also evident. I think I’d like it better if it didn’t have that black licorice quality in the flavor. Still a flavorful solid beer.
