Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle.
This is an extra stout porter. Unlike many stouts, Nightmare is not harsh or overly bitter. A smooth, massively flavoured creamy drink, best served on the ’warm’ side, allowing full appreciation of this four malt brew. It was runner-up in the ’Stout and Porter’ class at the Great British Beer Festival 1994, Champion Beer at the SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1995 and CHAMPION WINTER BEER OF BRITAIN at the first Great British Winter Beer Festival in Glasgow 1997. Gold Award - ’Stout and Porter’ class SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1999 and 2003.

Pours a deep rootbeer color, great lacing and moderate head. Aroma is dark, smokey chocolate with hints of hops. Flavor is dark mlts, coffee, and nice bitter hops. Fairly bitter for the style. Dry. A very nice english-style porter.

Bottle: Very roasty aroma with lots of roasted grain and malt and a strong chocolate presence. Pours a dark brown with red hilights and a somewhat quickly diminishing tan head. Very fruity up front and finishes with light chocolate, roasted grain, and roasted coffee.

A faint bit of ruby light seeps through the center of this one. The light khaki head is airy and lasts long enough to get noticed. The aroma is nicely roasty over a bit of chocolate cake. The flavor is a bit of a letdown. While smooth, it comes across a little bland after the fairly rich aroma. Still quite drinkable.

Dark brown color, coffee-like, nice. Liquorice aroma, a lot of malt, coffee. Balanced taste, round mouthfeel. Hoppy final, then with the roasted malt and caramel and liquorice.

Very dark color; nice head. Quite nice aroma, with roasted malts, chocolate, young beech wood. Malty taste, caramel, light liquorice, roasted malt. Ends with delicate chocolate and roasted malt, but not enough bitter. Really interesting.

bottled; thanks to fiulijn - ruby dark brown colour, firm creamy head, toasted aroma of black chocolate, licorice, medium-bodied, slightly salty, solid bitterness in a long roasted coffeish finish - a beautiful beer

Bottle. Pours near black with a small cream colored head. Nose is light molasses, roasted malts, watered down coffee, and hints of caramel. Taste is pretty much the same - light bitter coffee notes, roasted malts, light caramel, hint of smokiness, and cocoa. Body is smooth and creamy with light bitterness and mild carbonation. Finish is very roasty and coffee-like. Bitter with light bittersweet chocolate notes. Good stuff!
