Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle.
This is an extra stout porter. Unlike many stouts, Nightmare is not harsh or overly bitter. A smooth, massively flavoured creamy drink, best served on the ’warm’ side, allowing full appreciation of this four malt brew. It was runner-up in the ’Stout and Porter’ class at the Great British Beer Festival 1994, Champion Beer at the SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1995 and CHAMPION WINTER BEER OF BRITAIN at the first Great British Winter Beer Festival in Glasgow 1997. Gold Award - ’Stout and Porter’ class SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1999 and 2003.

The smell is malts, coffee, chocolate, slight molasses, christmas cookies, and biscuits. The look is brown to black in color with a decent beige head. The taste is the same as the smell.

Nice head at pour reduced to fine lacing around edge. Aroma was of some chocolate and vanilla. A toasted malt flavor with a hint of chocolate. I found it just on the thin side. Aftertasste is dry and somewhat bitter. Not bad but not my favorite either.

Bottled. Dark brown colour, mediumsized beigeish brown head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is mildly burnt wood, roasted malts, some ashes and chocolate. Flavour is roasted malts, burnt wet wooden notes, vanilla and some slight dark fruity notes. Also mild coffeeish sourness lurking in the background.

pours on the browner side of the typical porter burgundy brown with a frothy tannish head which deposits a bunch of spots and drips of lace. there is a little ashiness and a tad bit of tartness behind a nose of cream, chocolate, black barley, wood, treacle and vanilla. there is a sourness in the mix akin to coffee but there is little to no actual coffee flavor?... very nutty, lots of roasted barley, molasses, wood, vanilla and a savory quality which must come from the yeast. it is a touch tart... but JUST a touch. the acidity and dryness are in perfect balance with the medium-full body and soft creamy mouth feel. the alcohol content is perfect for session (although i only found one of these and it wasn’t cheap!) and it is complex enough at room temperature to make me want to drink it all night. well put together... 8/4/8/4/18/4.2

Aroma of chocolate and new apartment. The "new apartment" smell is, I don’t know how to explain - it smells like "clean" and a small whiff of fresh paint. Not a bad thing, it just triggered a memory. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Flavor is milk chocolate and roast coffee, sweet and bitter are well balanced, but bitter wins out in the end. Aftertaste is a dry. Very good!

Dark ruby red with a thin tan quickly fading head. Aroma of anise, black licorice, caramel and dough. Pretty light tasting, IMO. Taste of roasted malts, licorice and mild chocolate. Body is thin and unispiring finishes up clean with some minor licorice.
