Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle.
This is an extra stout porter. Unlike many stouts, Nightmare is not harsh or overly bitter. A smooth, massively flavoured creamy drink, best served on the ’warm’ side, allowing full appreciation of this four malt brew. It was runner-up in the ’Stout and Porter’ class at the Great British Beer Festival 1994, Champion Beer at the SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1995 and CHAMPION WINTER BEER OF BRITAIN at the first Great British Winter Beer Festival in Glasgow 1997. Gold Award - ’Stout and Porter’ class SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1999 and 2003.

Bottle from beer-ritz. Dark ruby stout. Creamy offwhite head. Coffee aroma. Coffee, fresh citrus, some smoke. Quite complex beer.

500 ml bottle bought at College Liquors. Pours a dark ruby-brown color with a swirling off-white head. The aroma is very interesting; dark fruits, figs maybe, some chewing tobacco, red man for sure. The taste is also interesting; initial sweet notes of toasted malts and sweet fruits, but a powerful tobacco presence, some hops in the finish. Not anything like any porters I’ve had, but pretty nice. The mouthfeel is a bit lighter than I’d like though.

Poured from 500ml bottle into dimpled mug. Nearly black with red tinges. Small tan head that diminishes quickly. Light lacing on inside of glass. Aromas dark malt, chocolate and dried dark fruit. Not as full flavored and complex as some other British Porters. More like a stout. A bit on the sweet side with tastes of chocolate, toasty malt, dark fruit and a hint of coffee. Kind of thin on the mouthfeel. Nice aftertaste of fruit. It’s drinkable, but at $5.49\bottle, there are better deals to be had.

Pours a very near black garnet with a small beige froth. Semi-sweet fruity aroma of light roasted coffee, creamy chocolate, light smoke and raisins. Super smooth mellow flavor, I can imagine this is what a traditional english porter tasted like. Subdued rich glassy malts, touch of sweet caramel, light chocolate & raisins, ever so subtle coffee and fruity hops, slightly sour. A complex beer where all the parts work in harmony to create a unified flavor. Medium body, soooo smooth and glassy with the faintest carbonation.

Poured a really rich deep dark drown with a brown head. Aroma was heavy roasted malts, fruit and chocolate. Flavor was more of the same. Super smooth and a very easy drinker. This was a really nice beer.

Bottle (in NZ), pours a deep mahogany brown with a light tan head. A strong fruity aroma, some caramal malt, spicy and a whiff of alcohol. Good fruit mouthfeel, with smooth caramal and toasted malt. The swallow thins out the palate, there’s a touch of metallicness before drying out nicely with increased hop bitterness that leaves you wanting more. It’s clear why this has been a winner.

500ml Bottle. Poured a dark brown with reddish edges and a large sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, caramel, a little earthy, and light roast. Tastes of cocoa, caramel, roast, and light coffee. Thinner body.
