Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle.
This is an extra stout porter. Unlike many stouts, Nightmare is not harsh or overly bitter. A smooth, massively flavoured creamy drink, best served on the ’warm’ side, allowing full appreciation of this four malt brew. It was runner-up in the ’Stout and Porter’ class at the Great British Beer Festival 1994, Champion Beer at the SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1995 and CHAMPION WINTER BEER OF BRITAIN at the first Great British Winter Beer Festival in Glasgow 1997. Gold Award - ’Stout and Porter’ class SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1999 and 2003.

Pours a deep espresso, which is exactly what the aroma is. Flavor is of coffee, chocolate and malt. Mouthfeel is ok, but a little thin. Aftertaste recreates the coffee.

Aroma of chocolate and volatile organics. In strong light the color is dark ruby - otherwise dark brown. The head is tan, but virtually non-existent. Thin to medium in body with very mild carbonation. Flavor is equal part dark roasted malt and chocolate malts. It finishes out as dry and dark. Very smooth and very tasty. Ends much dryer than it seemed to start. Extremely nice drink.

Bottle kindly picked up for me by Graham and Isobel (Loz’s parents) Poured dark brown, good aroma of dark roasted malts and nice bitter chocolate. Bitterness and coffee flavours come coursing through as does some chocolate, not a complicated beer by any stretch but actually one that was very nice.

Color exceedingly dark, almost impenetrable brown, with virtually no head. Aroma a mixture of chocolate, coffee, and soy sauce, weighted towards the soy side. Drinks smooth with little carbonation. Light bitterness, with the coffee flavor coming on strong at the end, and lingering in the aftertaste. Surprisingly drinkable for such a dark porter.

Bottled. Poured clear-relatively dark brown with a coppery shimmer and just a few loose bubble for head sticking around. The aroma was on the sweeter side, with milky chocolates, caramel, and darker earth represented.. sweet overall and very nicely presented. The flavor had sticky caramel and sweeter chocolates at the core with light earthy bitterness surrounding.. sticky caramel and chocolate on the finish too.. perhaps some cola in there. Very dry on the palate and sticky at the end.. lower carbonation and OK flow to it. This was a powerfully average porter.

deep brown with beige fluffy head, it has strong aroma of chestnut and chocolate. lively body, the flavor is coffee and mocha; the roasted barley carries through to lend a dry and chewy feel.

Interesting - I totally disliked this one. It’s been a while since I wrote down this rating- so I can’t really recall the circumstances of this rating. This is what I wrote down. Sour milk taste- leggy small head. Sweet milk chocolate taste. Mhhh. Weird - this rating seems to be off in comparison to others. Oh well - guess I have to give it another try.
