Commercial Description:
Cask, regular;
This is an extra stout porter but unlike many stouts, Nightmare is not harsh or overly bitter. This smooth, massively flavoured creamy drink is best served on the ’warm’ side, allowing full appreciation of this four malt brew. Strong malts dominate, but hoppiness rears out of this complex blend. Nightmare has won the Gold Award – ‘Stout and Porter’ class SIBA (North) Festival in 1999, 2003 and 2006 and went on to become Champion Beer at the SIBA (North) Festival in 1995 and 2006

Cask Conditioned, at The Maltings, York, Yorkshire.
The beer of the year so far!! This beer gives you nightmares it’s so good. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I had it. Dark brown with rich, smooth tan head. Swirls of darkness contrast the freshly whipped head. Rich, smooth and silky charcoal flavours. Faint honey atop a full well rounded caramel base. I’m salivating just typing this rate. Wonderful complexity that doesn’t tire the palate or the mind. The generosity of the flavour completely hides the strength of the beer. The pub: well The Malting is a tiny little pub within the mediaval walls of York. The governor Sean is a large fellow who takes great pride in the condition of his beers. All 5 rates on the night were is show condition. Many thanks SilkT for his running commentary of the beers on that night and for the background on the pub which he was gleaning from the web and broadcasting to me in the bar. www.maltings.co.uk

Cask at the Swan in the Rushes, Loughborough. Superb porter, possibly the best I’ve tried. Great looking, very dark with a creamy tan head, excellent lacing. Rich roasted, chocolatey aroma. Chocolate, nuts and vanilla in the taste and much more. Very smooth, very drinkable. Excellent.

Hand pump cask at Cahrlies Pub in Cpenhagen, Denmark. Pours a very dark brown, almost black with mahogany edges and a thick foamy tan head that settles into a lasting lace. Chcolate malty aroma with dark fruit, hops and oatmeal. This is a very smooth quaffable stout. Huge chocolate malty flavor with dark fruit notes(especially cherry and fig), oatmeal and a bitter sweet dry hoppy finish.

Most comments above are from USA so for the bottled version. Come over to Northern England and taste just how amazing the draught version of this beer is. Complex chocolate and nuts that don’t appear in the bottled version.

Cask @ The Wharf, Aalborg, DK. Pitch black with an off-white head. Aroma has a distinct red wine character. Hints of toffee and caramel as it warms. Flavour also has red wine a character but leans a little bit towards port wine. Toffee finish and a nice bitterness. Could use a bit more bite.

(Cask at GBBF, London, 2 Aug) Colour is dark brown, almost black, with ruby notes when seen through light, small head. Nose is roasted with evident notes of chocolate and oyster sauce. Taste is roasted with chocolate, coffee and hints of soy sauce and tar. Very well balanced, dry, smooth, with a lovely hoppy finish. A old favourite of mine, still reliable.
