Aroma is toffee, grassy hops, a bit of brown sugar and some orange. Flavor is bitter grassy hops, some light grapefruit, lots of peppery alcohol, a bit of biscuity toffee. Finishes very dry with some hoppiness. Very strong, and burns with in an intense alcohol warmth. Overall I’d say it’s a decent strong ale, though heavy and unbalanced. Unfortunate does not contain a lot of the refinement of other barley wines. sisyphus12 (98), Belmont, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Mar 13, 2007 Clear medium brown color with a light honey aroma...maybe maple syrup in there as well. A smooth and sugary flavor, balance is not the best but it is somewhat refreshing given its loaded alcohol content. Not something I’m going to drink everyday but a nice beer from Harpoon robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA

Creamy Mouthfeel..Laden With Very Sweet Syrapy Malt...Particularly Candy Sugar...Nice Warming From Alcohol.. Lacking Some Depth But Hugely Enjoyable. Dickinsonbeer (3494), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Mar 8, 2007 12 oz re-release bottle. I dont know why they are re-releasing some of these. They arent good. This one pours just about the lightest color I have ever seen for a barleywine- it was a deep gold! with a thin white head. Aroma is fusel and burning alcohol, herbal hops, and a sticky sugary candy sugar sweetness that wasnt very pleasant. Sticky honey and corn syrup flavor, with wierd harsh herbal hops, more alcohol apparent. Harsh prickly mouthfeel and finish. oldclarkhouse (7), St. Johnsbury, Vermont, USA does not count | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 5, 2007 Generally a big fan of the Harpoon 100 bl series, this is generally up to par. Great, rich nose, decent malt character. Not much as far as a lasting head. Might be nice if the hop quality was a little less bitter/more floral. A little watery off the toungue. This batch was their encore run. Would have been nice to have tried the original for comparison. hiphops (280), caldwell, New Jersey, USA
| 0.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 1/5 | 1/10 | 1/5 | 1/20 | Feb 16, 2007 wow this is the worst barley ever. it looks watery as hell mad light copper colored. smells like sour milk and metal. not the good kind of liquid death metal the nasty kind of period blood metal. with a touch of sweetness comign through. taste like breakfast pork and shame. very bitter for a barley wine. its all bitter hops and bullshit. wery subpar. wery. i’d rather drink a beer brewed with the vag juice of a mountain goat.
all tomfoolery aside bring in the janefoolery.hahaha no really this beer sucks Thaichile (599), 10aFly, New Jersey, USA

Nose is traditional barleywine fruit with some hop pineyness. Flavor is light for the style, a cross between a barleywine and their IPA. I liked the additon of the hops which made this into a crisper brew rather than the thick, and sometimes cloying sweetness. I seem to like Harpoon beers and think that they are overall underated.
