Commercial Description:
The big, malty scent of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series Maibock is present just above the floral hop nose. The combination of five malts creates a full, smooth texture that yields a clean, dry bitterness. This is a full-bodied beer with a pronounced hop and malt character.
Editor’s note. 2004 and earlier verions were not 100 barrel series, but were simply called Spring Maibock and available on draught and in 12 oz bottles.

100 Barrel Series, 22 oz bomber, procured at City Market, Burlington VT. Not a whole lot to write home about with this one, my first 100 barrell series and not real impressed. Lacks the malty goodness of a real maibock. Most prevalent flavor to me was the alcohol. Wouldn’t buy more of this one.

clear deep copper, off white head. aroma of burlap, berris, rye and earth. sweet, slightly syrupy mouthfeel. nutty toasted malt flavours off the front, going sweet and caramel like and ending firm, earthy and hoppy. very nice.

Clear brownish copper hue, smallish dark egg-shell head. Straight bready caramel nose, leafy and minty hop backing are more abvious than I’d anticipated. Soft mild floral, nutty and fruity palate. Good flavor integration, the higher than average hops are backed by a rather juicy sweet maltiness that is saved by a soft yet efficient small-bubbled carbonation. Not bad for Harpoon.

100 Barrel series: Pours red with a thin off-white head. Smells nutty with some brown sugar notes shining through. Taste is on the sweet end of the spectrum with some minor rosey notes and a semi-bitter finish. This one is definitely more of an amber ale or APA than a bock beer.

RBSG 2005. Dark amber body, small creamy beige head. Darker than I expected for a maibock. Sweet mildly hoppy aroma. Flavour is pleasantly sweet with just enough hoppy bitterness to balance things. Medium palate. Slightly above average, quaffable.

(22oz bottle, RBSG05) Crystal clear nut brown body topped by beige head. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel. Taste is medium sweet, caramel, light nutty. Soft, light-medium body. Pretty one-dimensional.

100 barrel: Poured copper colored with a medium beige head. Big malty aroma and light varnish. Flavor comes up short with just mild maltiness and a short bitter finish.
