Commercial Description:
Harpoon Old Ale is inspired by the sustaining winter offerings of many English breweries. This complex & malty brew is marked by significant alcohol warmth, balanced bitterness, biscuit/roasted undertones, and sublime mouthfeel. Proper English yeast, traditional hop varietals, and generous malt bill create a wonderful companion for the fireside. Enjoyable for consumption now or for extended cellaring.

Bottle shared by puddintane at Columbus tasting 6 - Pours dark amber with a small offwhite head. Aromas of caramel, grassy hops, and some raisin. Flavor is caramel, slight grassy hops, a good amount of yeast, and some dark fruits. Medium body. Average carbonation. Pretty fair beer

NOt much aroma. Taste is interesting. Has some hops and spice but also a bit of butter up front. Gets better as you go along for sure. Great finish.

Deep amber beer with a thin white head. Slightly dusty aroma, sweet maltiness with a touch of sweet fruit, some bubble gum and a bit of spicy yeastiness. Some sweet cardamom flavour and an earthy bitterness that backs up the spiciness quite nicely. Not really an old ale, but it’s still a pretty tasty brew.

Pretty awesome beer. Nice brown collor and sweet, malty aroma. Not much head to speak of. Very sweet taste which is offset with just enough hops. Can’t tell this has a high alcohol content at all. Not sure if this is true to the style, as I’ve not had an old ale before. Definately worth trying but maybe not worth revisiting if only because of the price (almost 5 bux for a 16.6oz bottle).

Pours brown with a thin white head. Smell is overly swet with lots of malt and sparse hoppy elements. Taste is sweet with some earthy elements. Not true to style.

Aroma is striking-- immediately, there are smells of aged hop, caramel, and flowers. The body is a brilliantly-clear amber; head is a perfect, foamy tan. Flavor is intense. There are some smoky, malty flavors... there is a pronounced hop flavor and yet the beer is not overly hoppy... some sherry/port flavor... and the beer has a big malt-sweet backbone. This is what I’d imagine a "lite barleywine" to taste like. Nice, balanced hop finish. My only complaint is that the beer is a bit TOO sweet. Otherwise, I’d say this was a perfect brew. I’d love to find this on draught. This beer would probably age very well.
