Commercial Description:
The 20th installment of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series has been brewed to celebrate the annual hop harvest. Harpoon Glacier Harvest Wet Hop beer is a pale ale made with fresh hops picked just hours before being tossed into the brew. Wet hop beers are brewed using fresh, wet (hops contain about 60% moisture when they are first picked) hops instead of traditional dried hops. Typically, when hops are picked they are quickly dried and refrigerated to make them more suitable and consistent for brewing. This process allows brewers to use hops that were harvested in the fall throughout the following year. Alternatively, wet hops need to be used within hours of their being harvested or they will begin to rapidly degrade. Wet hops retain some of their natural oils and volatile flavors that dissipate when dried. This yields an immersed, intense hop flavor in the beer. Harpoon brewer Ray Dobens, creator of the beer, harvested the Glacier hops in Seneca New York the morning of August 13th and immediately drove them back to Boston that very afternoon in a refrigerated truck. Ray added the newly harvested hops to the brew within hours after the harvest. The fresh hops were added to a malty, copper-colored ale. The combination is a pleasing blend of fresh hop flavor and sweet malt.

NorCal Feb ’08 - There were a few things going on with this beer, none of which made me think this was a must have kind of beer. An aroma of light stale hope, grass and caramel with an underlying bubblegum character I don’t enjoy. Appearance was clear, amber in color with a medium sized head. Flavors were caramel, earthy hops, and light grapefruit. Drinkable, yes. In search of, no.

22oz bottle, purchased and comsumed several months ago. Sampled a bit warm. Pours a medium gold with reasonable head and carbonation. Surprisingly little aroma for this type of beer. Reasonably full flavour with a decent hoppy aftertase, but nothing particularly special about it. I certainly was not noticing any fresh hop flavour. Disappointing overall.

Pours a clearish golden color with a thinnish white head. Smells hoppy and a bit metallic. Bit of a grassy hop smell with just a bit of citrus. Tastes grassy and spicy and hoppy and citrusy. Different type of hops flavor than I’m used to. The bitterness is very good just kind of different, maybe even more acidic than a dry-hopped beer. Palate is tangy and tart. Decent carbonation and a bit of thickness with all that hoppiness. I like it. I think two bombers would be the limit taste wise though. Not because of the alcohol so much just very very tasty.
Update: 10/20/08, 22oz bottle, 2008 version. Pours brilliant, clearish amber with a medium size white head, decent retention, specks of lace. Smells musty and a bit funky, metallic with some slight caramel sweetness and some slightly astringent hop notes. Tastes better than it smells for sure. Tastes very earthy hoppy with some dry, cereal type malts as well. Medium body, good carbonation. 537313=3.1

Bomber. Wet hops. I guess that makes this a little bit different. I thought it would be very hoppy, but it ended up being pretty mild. Had some vinuous qualities and notes of citrus on the nose. Pretty decent brew, but not as delish as promised.

220 ozer for Christmas present...Nice packaging but not much else to remember...Fairly hoppy, decent amber hue, expected more but was very easy to drink, minimal citrus, not from the land of hops.

Pours light amber with nicely sized beige head. Hoppy aroma- simple but good. Flavours of lemon and grapefruit hops with a very dry finish- mosty notable on the tongue and roof of the mouth. Some caramel notes in there near the end as well. A winner for its style.

A light, drinkable, pleasant enough ale. Probably about average for Harpoon. Nose of sweet malts and sweet oranges. Beautiful clear rich gold with a small frothy white head. Taste of sweet malts, caramel, and American hops, each flavor clear, no flavor intense. Not a big mouth feel, small bitter finish. No flaws, no intensity. Quite pleasant.

Bottle purchased at Wine Gallery in Boston. Poured a rich copper-amber body with a fluffy whitish head. Nose predominant with stale malts and mild oniony hops. Grassy, earthy, gritty flavor with good carbonation. Finished bitter and somewhat sour. More malt profile than hops. A bit disappointing considering name, packaging, and label.
