Commercial Description:
The 20th installment of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series has been brewed to celebrate the annual hop harvest. Harpoon Glacier Harvest Wet Hop beer is a pale ale made with fresh hops picked just hours before being tossed into the brew. Wet hop beers are brewed using fresh, wet (hops contain about 60% moisture when they are first picked) hops instead of traditional dried hops. Typically, when hops are picked they are quickly dried and refrigerated to make them more suitable and consistent for brewing. This process allows brewers to use hops that were harvested in the fall throughout the following year. Alternatively, wet hops need to be used within hours of their being harvested or they will begin to rapidly degrade. Wet hops retain some of their natural oils and volatile flavors that dissipate when dried. This yields an immersed, intense hop flavor in the beer. Harpoon brewer Ray Dobens, creator of the beer, harvested the Glacier hops in Seneca New York the morning of August 13th and immediately drove them back to Boston that very afternoon in a refrigerated truck. Ray added the newly harvested hops to the brew within hours after the harvest. The fresh hops were added to a malty, copper-colored ale. The combination is a pleasing blend of fresh hop flavor and sweet malt.

A bit of fresh hop character in the aroma gets steamrolled by caramelly malts. Flavor is almost all malt too. Why make a fresh hop beer less hoppy than an IPA where the hops play second fiddle to the malts? Boo on that concept.

Bomber from Total Wine (Tampa, FL). Session 28. Pours a clear amber color with one finger white head that settles slowly. Aroma is sweet and lightly malty with notes of honey, caramel, light citrus, light floral esters. Flavor is about the same with a slight funk toward the finish. Light to medium body with a watery bland finish. Didnt sense much hops at all -- Just not a big fan of this one.

Session 28; Just a slight grassy/pine aroma. I was expecting a lot more from this wet hopped beer. Pours an amber color, with a huge white head. Flavor has a bit of citrus punch, a touch of biscuit malts, and a decent bitter finish. Not a bad beer, but a bit disappointing.

Thin head of fine bubbles that dissipates quickly. Light carbonation. Light hops aroma with some smoked grains, dried flowers and pale malts. Color is a copper brown. Light to medium bodied with a fizzy mouthfeel. Some tea leavs, bitter hops that show up late swallow, pale malts and a bit of spices. Bit of chalkyness and some astringency too. Finishes bittern and dry and pretty thin. Not a great brew but average.

Bottle.
Pours a deep, rich amber with an aroma of faint bready malt and blunt rosy hops. Flavor is a malty soda bread with a faint sweet floral finish. Nice, full mouthfeel. Not enough hops; more like a half-assed malt bomb, if there is such a thing as a malt bomb.

From the Bottle at the Denver Rare Beer Tasting, Wynkoop Brewery 25/09/2009 (2009 Vintage) Malt and hop aromas. Golden coloured floral and a little rich on the palate with a crisp and slightly dry malt finish.

Session 28. A transparent copper color beer with a nice small head. The aroma was a faint hop scent. The taste was a very balanced malt/hop combination & at this time the wet hops may have faded after 2.5 months from the bottling date. I do not understand why this just got put on the shelf at the store 2.5 months after bottling date. I guess the distributors do not understand the concept of a wet hop beer & they must be drank fresh.

Bomber from Whole Foods Market Tampa. Pours orange-gold with a white head. Nose is caramel, bread, mild Englishhops, herbs (the beer is so English you almost need to pronounce the H), grassy meadow, tart greens, and a mild bitterness. Flavor is mild from beginning to end. Light to medium body with lingering hops and a very UnAmerican bitterness- English style with a mild sessionable quality for a fresh hop beer. Unique and enjoyable.
