Commercial Description:
The 20th installment of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series has been brewed to celebrate the annual hop harvest. Harpoon Glacier Harvest Wet Hop beer is a pale ale made with fresh hops picked just hours before being tossed into the brew. Wet hop beers are brewed using fresh, wet (hops contain about 60% moisture when they are first picked) hops instead of traditional dried hops. Typically, when hops are picked they are quickly dried and refrigerated to make them more suitable and consistent for brewing. This process allows brewers to use hops that were harvested in the fall throughout the following year. Alternatively, wet hops need to be used within hours of their being harvested or they will begin to rapidly degrade. Wet hops retain some of their natural oils and volatile flavors that dissipate when dried. This yields an immersed, intense hop flavor in the beer. Harpoon brewer Ray Dobens, creator of the beer, harvested the Glacier hops in Seneca New York the morning of August 13th and immediately drove them back to Boston that very afternoon in a refrigerated truck. Ray added the newly harvested hops to the brew within hours after the harvest. The fresh hops were added to a malty, copper-colored ale. The combination is a pleasing blend of fresh hop flavor and sweet malt.

(Draught) Poured amber and clear with medium sized and white head. Grassy aroma wasn’t as strong I would’ve liked. Palate was dry bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours the beer had were malts, hops, grass and bitterness. Flavour ended to bitter aftertaste. Hops were too hidden.

Bottle, pours a light golden with a fluffy white head. Nose was dusty and sweet smelling, like sugar and wet tree branches. Pallate was sticky, literally and tacky and too reduced or something. I love resiny piney IPAs but this beer drank like simple syrup. Flavor was citrusy and sugary with a distinct wet leaf quality. I’ll pass.

bottle. clear copper pour, lingering white head. very mild hop character, but pretty good for a APA. i was expecting an IPA when i bought it as the bottle doesn’t indicate. very drinkable, slightly malty, but good balance.

Tried a sample at Brewfest Tallahassee. There is indeed big hop aromas and flavors, but the intensity makes the beer almost sour and too full of citrus. Decent, but wasn’t impressed.

Pint @ Tyler’s Apex. Ok aroma, sweet, little fruit, peach, citrus, sourdough. Clean copper color, ok head and lace. Bitter sweet flavor, medium body, smooth creamy mouthfeel, bitter finish. Eh. Just didn’t do much for me, Looked good. Guess I was expecting more ooomph from the aroma and flavor, why, not sure, but didn’t make me want another.

#28. Pours deep copper with notes of citrus and grapefruit on the nose. The powefrul and full palate shows great notes of malt which has its sweetness actually brightened by the bitter citrus notes of the hops. The finish is long and pleasant with the hops showing nice lite signs.

Session 28

9/27/2009: Harpoon Glacier Harvest ’09... Aroma: Thin toffee malt; light peach and citrus. Appearance: Brilliant amber to copper color; beige crown. Flavor: Lightly toasted toffee malt with some wet citrusy hops in the middle. Palate: Medium-light. Overall: Kind of a waste of hops...

22 fl. oz. bottle ( Alcohol 6.7% / IBU 38 / OG 16) from Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, Ohio. Rating #123 for this beer.
