Commercial Description:
The 20th installment of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series has been brewed to celebrate the annual hop harvest. Harpoon Glacier Harvest Wet Hop beer is a pale ale made with fresh hops picked just hours before being tossed into the brew. Wet hop beers are brewed using fresh, wet (hops contain about 60% moisture when they are first picked) hops instead of traditional dried hops. Typically, when hops are picked they are quickly dried and refrigerated to make them more suitable and consistent for brewing. This process allows brewers to use hops that were harvested in the fall throughout the following year. Alternatively, wet hops need to be used within hours of their being harvested or they will begin to rapidly degrade. Wet hops retain some of their natural oils and volatile flavors that dissipate when dried. This yields an immersed, intense hop flavor in the beer. Harpoon brewer Ray Dobens, creator of the beer, harvested the Glacier hops in Seneca New York the morning of August 13th and immediately drove them back to Boston that very afternoon in a refrigerated truck. Ray added the newly harvested hops to the brew within hours after the harvest. The fresh hops were added to a malty, copper-colored ale. The combination is a pleasing blend of fresh hop flavor and sweet malt.

Kind of a throw back to me. Very distinct lager like aroma. Malty sweetness, grass, hay. Nice looking amber with a big head. Flavor is malty with a hop end. A little watery at the finish.

The aroma is rather generic hops it does have hops but they are mostly grassy. There is also caramel malt. The appearance is amber with an average head. The flavor is like the aroma with a nice malty finish. Overall not that bad but nothing special.

aroma smells a lot like wet hay. the pour brings a slightly reddish brown eith a weak head. the taste of malts seems a bit weak and astringent. the hops are a back seat. flavor is almost second fiddle. try if you got it.

Pours a clear dark golden orange amber with some light coppery hues and lots of bright golden orange color when held to a light source. 1.5 finger frothy white head that slowly fades into a lasting ring. Floral citrus hop aroma with some earthy dank hop oil. Sweet citrus peel notes, mostly lemon and orange peel and subtle grapefruit. Malty caramel presence in the nose as well. Resinous medium body that is slightly watered down with some sweet floral citrus hop notes up front that provide a lingering bitterness that is quickly balanced by a caramel malt back bone with hints of rye into a dry slightly piny finish. Clean, crisp and easy drinking with some nice lemon peel and grapefruit along with some earthy grass notes. The alcohol is very well masked and the malt backbone provides some nice balance but the hophead in me wished that it was a little less prominent so the sweet citrus, dry bitterness could shine a bit more.

Clear reddish amber with a dense bone colored head and fairly strong lacing. Aroma is grassy hops overshadowed by rubbery sulfurous notes. Clean biscuity malt taste, with mild hop vegetality and citrus. They should rename this in a fashion that does not lead one to expect a prominent hop taste. $6/22oz

On tap at Kinsale Irish Pub, Boston. 100 Barrel series #29 (but apparently a repeat of #20). Clear amber colour, thin white head. Modest grassy hop aroma. Slight estery marzipan notes in the flavour. Clean and fresh, but I was expecting a more pronounced hop attack in a wet hop beer. Perhaps the Glacier hops just don’t deliver a lot of punch - can’t say I’m too familiar with the variety. Touches of citrus in the aftertaste. Medium bodied. Pleasant enough but not that inspiring - for a special release it just doesn’t seem very special.

Thanks stowehop! Pours a golden color. Sweet and hoppy aroma. Flavor is lighter on the hops than I expected and a bit too malty. Not what I thought it was going to be. Not horrible.

Bomber with fancy foil and a fancy label. Body is about the color of apple juice and supports a sudsy head that seems to be sticking around for a little while. Lackluster aromas of apples and caramel. Flavors are a little bit of a disappointment... there is a decent malt presence and some nice herbal hops in there, but what with all the specialness that the bottle advertises, I just... well... I was hoping for something a little more. If this were a 12 oz bottle in a $7 six-pack I’d probably be happy... but it isn’t so I’m a little bummed. This seems to be a running story with Harpoon’s "special" releases.
