Commercial Description:
The 20th installment of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series has been brewed to celebrate the annual hop harvest. Harpoon Glacier Harvest Wet Hop beer is a pale ale made with fresh hops picked just hours before being tossed into the brew. Wet hop beers are brewed using fresh, wet (hops contain about 60% moisture when they are first picked) hops instead of traditional dried hops. Typically, when hops are picked they are quickly dried and refrigerated to make them more suitable and consistent for brewing. This process allows brewers to use hops that were harvested in the fall throughout the following year. Alternatively, wet hops need to be used within hours of their being harvested or they will begin to rapidly degrade. Wet hops retain some of their natural oils and volatile flavors that dissipate when dried. This yields an immersed, intense hop flavor in the beer. Harpoon brewer Ray Dobens, creator of the beer, harvested the Glacier hops in Seneca New York the morning of August 13th and immediately drove them back to Boston that very afternoon in a refrigerated truck. Ray added the newly harvested hops to the brew within hours after the harvest. The fresh hops were added to a malty, copper-colored ale. The combination is a pleasing blend of fresh hop flavor and sweet malt.

Bottle. Pours a clear light burnt orange color with a small miniscule head. Nose is lightly hoppy with a decent sticky sweet malt to it. Palate is a little thin with a nice bitter finish. Flavor is mostly sweet caramel malt, a little dirt, some stickyness and a light hop note throughout.

22oz bomber from the local Hannaford. Pours a crystal-clear amber with a good inch of off-white head. Aroma is composed primarily of hops, grassy citrussy minty almost. Tastes very ballanced, between grassy minty hops and caramel malt. Deceptively light, with its light body and ample carbonation, this is a real easy drinker. Not the best wet-hop beer I’ve had, but a phenomenal APA.

Bottle. Golden with a white head. Grainy apple quality, soapy almost wheat y hop character. Bread y with a honey note if you really seek it out. Fading fast.

[2091-20090411] 22floz bottle. Grainy hops and mild yeasty aroma. Slightly hazy, medium orange brown body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Bitter grains and hops flavour with a mild floral aftertaste. Medium body. Average.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, garthicus, blankboy & tupalev - blankboy’s bottle. Dark golden with a tight white head. Big aroma, but not just hoppy - also some nice notes of honey and malt. Kinda like graham crackers, actually. Flavour has an odd floral character, along with more of that honey/malt combo and some pleasant hops to finish. Not too bad at all.

A golden amber ale with a thick off white head. In aroma, good restrained British hops. In mouth, crisp refreshing ale with good biscuitty malt, nice hopping, classy. Tasted April 25 2009.

2009-04-11. Orangey amber body with a small off-white head. Modest resiny hops, and dry malts in the aroma. (6+) Flavour has a moderate bitterness throughout, bit of muted grass and mild dry malts underneath. (6+) Average palate. Okay. Hops probably had more complexity when it was a bit younger. Bottle from Premier Gourmet, Buffalo
