Commercial Description:
The 20th installment of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series has been brewed to celebrate the annual hop harvest. Harpoon Glacier Harvest Wet Hop beer is a pale ale made with fresh hops picked just hours before being tossed into the brew. Wet hop beers are brewed using fresh, wet (hops contain about 60% moisture when they are first picked) hops instead of traditional dried hops. Typically, when hops are picked they are quickly dried and refrigerated to make them more suitable and consistent for brewing. This process allows brewers to use hops that were harvested in the fall throughout the following year. Alternatively, wet hops need to be used within hours of their being harvested or they will begin to rapidly degrade. Wet hops retain some of their natural oils and volatile flavors that dissipate when dried. This yields an immersed, intense hop flavor in the beer. Harpoon brewer Ray Dobens, creator of the beer, harvested the Glacier hops in Seneca New York the morning of August 13th and immediately drove them back to Boston that very afternoon in a refrigerated truck. Ray added the newly harvested hops to the brew within hours after the harvest. The fresh hops were added to a malty, copper-colored ale. The combination is a pleasing blend of fresh hop flavor and sweet malt.

22oz bomber from the local Hannaford. Pours a crystal-clear amber with a good inch of off-white head. Aroma is composed primarily of hops, grassy citrussy minty almost. Tastes very ballanced, between grassy minty hops and caramel malt. Deceptively light, with its light body and ample carbonation, this is a real easy drinker. Not the best wet-hop beer I’ve had, but a phenomenal APA.

The best Harpoon beer I’ve ever had, hands down. 22oz bottle. Full golden color. Delicious earthy hop flavors. Very soft on the palate, slightly reminiscent of finings. Completely mellow and drinkable, but complex enough to savor every sip. Delicate and deilicious.

Draught at Waterfront (on the nitro engine). Orange colored with a substantial frothy head. Spicy citrus hops in the aroma, with definite herbal qualities, I’m even sensing something like a trace of licorice or anise. Light caramel malt flavor with orangey hop notes, again herbal and mildly spicy, with a leafy presence throughout. By far the most enjoyable beer I’ve had from Harpoon.

Foxy-amber with orange sides under yellow-orange, good & dense head, leaving lace. Very fresh hops nose with caramel & cookies; hopbales. Mild-bitter flavour, with hints at cookies sweetness, but ending on slightly flowery impression. Finishes a bit empty. Slightly tart, dry, effectively hopoil character. Very special, interesting beer; Ought to be drunk much fresher - straight from the barrel, but I’m very happy already, Uncle J.!

Nice looking bomber with gold foil on the neck, and brewer’s signature on the label. The beer came out looking nice too, as the color orange amber, body clear and mildly carbonated, and the head smallish but steady. The smell was a bit odd to me, as the hops were present, but so was a lot a sweetness. The taste was lot more in line with expectations, as the hops showed up more forcefully in each sip. Not highly hopped, but quite a bright pale ale. A lot of lingering sweetness in the finish. Soft feeling in the mouth, and the mild carbonation made the aftertaste short and sweet. I liked the beer, but not one I would be seeking out each time.

Bottle. Pours copper with a creamy white head. Smells of pine, sage, some citrus, hints of spice, doughy. Not really hoppy per se. Taste is of tea, oranges, sweet malt, some pepper. Mouthfeel is full with a biscuity finish.

#28. Pours deep copper with notes of citrus and grapefruit on the nose. The powefrul and full palate shows great notes of malt which has its sweetness actually brightened by the bitter citrus notes of the hops. The finish is long and pleasant with the hops showing nice lite signs.

22oz bottle. Pours a deep orangey copper with a medium-thin light tan head. The aroma is herbal and full of toasted bread. The flavor follows the aroma: bready with some toasty melanoidins, mild caramel malt sweetness, and an interesting herbal hop character. The finish is well-balanced with hop bitterness (fairly clean, herbal - slightly medicinal, not quite earthy, not quite spicy). The mouthfeel is medium-full in body with some swirly ropes of fullness. The carbonation is soft. Overall, not the hop bomb I expect of wet hop ales, but still really well-balanced and drinkable.
