Commercial Description:
ABOUT Rauchfetzen Brew Date: 10/17/08 Packaging Date: 10/31/08 Harpoon Rauchfetzen is the 25th offering from our 100 Barrel Series. We used beechwood smoked malt from Bamberg, Germany to craft this copper-colored ale that evokes Rauchfetzen, a poetic German word meaning “wisp of smoke.” While many smoked beers are heavy on the pallet, this beer allows the character of the smoked malt to play off the herbal bitterness of Hallertau hops and the fresh, bread-like quality of Munich and Pilsner malts. Enjoy this beer with a variety of cheeses and sausages. BREWED BY This beer was brewed by Charlie Cummings, Harpoon brewer AVAILABLE FROM November 2008 to .... 650mL Bottle, purchased at Town Line Liquors - East Greenwich, RI. Pours a hazy orangish-champagne, with a gelatinous shake of fine white foam above. Aroma is largely non-existent. Not much there except maybe a touch of alcohol and malt. Flavor quickly reveals smoke, blended evenly with a light brown sugar-esque base. The body is really light, dry and effervescent, bringing a lot of characters quickly to the senses. The smoke turns kind of sharp and piquant in a fruity-alcohol kind of way. Not bitter or acerbic, just pointed. I want more smoke, though. It’s a nice character, but could more smoke volume. A pleasant juicy hop finish brings balance. This is a very fine, sessionable smoked beer, it’s just needs more rauch.

Bottle: Poured a golden orange with a white head. The aroma was smoke and jerky. The first sip was heavy smoke and beef jerky. After that, it mellowed out and wasn’t as smokey but had a light spicy finish. Overall, not a fan of smoked beers.

Clear gold, frothy white head. Light smoke aroma and sweet grain. Taste is nice and light with great flavor, some white pepper finish. Pretty nice beer.

Pours a clear orange/golden with off white head. Aroma of smoke, hops, grain. malts. Similar taste. Very crisp and easy to drink. Decent but not as complex as I’d like for a smoky beer. I guess I’m spoiled from the Left Hand Smokejumper I had a few weeks back.

Bottle shared with the barrios, scottyp, curly. Pours a clear dark orange gold with fair wispy layer of offwhite head. Nose is pretty good light hamy smoke. Flavor is again light smoke, but pretty onesided. Finishes almost a burnt. I do actually like this one of the series, but that may just be due to my penchant for smoke.

Pours a lasting ring of beige head with a clear, amber-copper body. Aromas of caramel, bread, hint of smoke. Ditto flavor. Some smoke and sweetness on the finish. Easy drinking and clean. More smoke would be nice.

Bottle. Kept this one a bit too long probably as I stuck it in my beer fridge long, long ago, and then kind of forgot about it. Pours a hazy lightly browned amber with a medium to large creamy bone white head. Light smoke which becomes a bit more prominent as it warms, little bit of grain, and some fading hops, dry and musky. Just shy of medium bodied, light sweetness but otherwise not much going on. Finishes up dry and with a touch more smoke and a nice crisp bitterness. Held up a lot better than I’d have thought. Rather refreshing.

Pours a clear pale golden yellow; straw-colored. Brief head. Not all that impressive to look at. The smell is smoked bacon. Slight hops and German ale underneath. The bitter malt is but a subservient accent. The taste is smoky, again. As it warms, more of the earthy German malts come out. It’s a smoky, one-note taste but that one note is good enough. The feel is dry and creamy. Hearty and appropriate for style. Not an amazing flavor, but a really nice pleasant drink.
