WVHouseofBeer (337), Morgantown, West Virginia, USA Nov 2, 2009 Poured black with a small tan head. Good aromas of coffee, cocoa, and roasted malt. Flavors of chocolate, molasses, and a little bit of nuttiness. Not too shabby of a stout. BigBen2120 (688), Derry, New Hampshire, USA Aug 17, 2009 12oz bottle from a mixed 12pack from Market Basket. Pours an almost opaque black with few ruby-red highlights and a quarter inch of light tan head. Smells strongly of chocolate malt (not chocolate), reminiscent of espresso beans. Espressso beans dominate the flavor as well with a malty sweetness. Flavor actually reminds me a lot of a less alcoholic Kahlua. Very similar to Kahlua, which doesn’t bother me since I really like Kahlua. Medium in body with ample carbonation. Not the most drinkable beer in the world, though it wasn’t much work to finish the glass. A unique interesting beer unlike any I’ve had. Perhaps a more fitting name would be ’Coffee Stout’ rather than a chocolate stout, though I understand the name. Glad I tried it, definitely worth a try. I may try cooking with this one too - I think it may add a unique pleasant character to a chocolate pudding or brownies (see Saunders’ ’Best of American Beer and Food’ to see what I mean). Not a bad beer overall. Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA May 31, 2009 The pour is dark brown with clear brown edges and thin tan head. The aroma is full yummy fudgy fig brownie and a sense of dark roastiness. The taste is nice and chocolaty like followed by figs, peaches, vanilla, fudge and some dark roasted malts. Wow, lots of rich flavor going on here. Yum. Palidor19 (1750), Brandon, Florida, USA May 30, 2009 yummy. the cocoa is highly refined with a touch of mild spices and perhaps a touch of hazelnut. highly carbonated yet a touch thin at the end. the begging however is where all the flavor is. TampaBrew (746), Tampa, Florida, USA May 25, 2009 Poured black with thin tan head. Aroma was chocolate and more chocolate. Flavor is roast malts, sweet malt and tons of cocoa and dark chocolate. Full body. Smooth. Very good Sweet stout. gunhaver (1024), Tampa, Florida, USA May 24, 2009 Bottle, courtesy someone. Black pour, tan head, watery lacing. Pure chocolate in the nose and some sharp licorice, some caramel. Chocolate flavors, licorice, some roast in the finish, lingering. Medium-bodied, balanced, disappointing flavor compared to the nose. jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA May 22, 2009 @Tampa Wkly Gathering-pours a light brown head and mahogany color. Aroma is dark malt-chocolate. Taste is dark malt-chocolate, secondary earthy hops. matta (1137), Tampa, Florida, USA May 19, 2009 WOW, a pretty terrific Sweet Stout from Harpoon! I bought the last Wintery Mix 12pk at Total Wine because it was out of date and I really wanted to try this beer before it disappeared for good. - Black thick cola like body and a velvety tan head. The aroma is a moist chocolate cake. Lightly yeasty, mocha coffee latte, fudgy toffee lusciousness! I let this warm to near room temperature for about 45min, and man, it really opened up. The hops come across with a touch of bitterness in the finish. - Well done Harpoon on this brew… especially for the funds!
