Commercial Description:
In 1986 Harpoon co-founders Rich Doyle and Dan Kenary began brewing Harpoon in Boston to share with others the joy of making—and drinking—great beer. In 2000, we added a second brewery in Windsor, Vermont to keep up with the demand. As a regional craft brewer, we gained interest and respect for cider, a drink with strong roots and history in New England. Harpoon’s cider is our contribution to the long heritage of cider made with fresh juice from locally grown apples. Harpoon Cider is made from a blend of locally grown apples including the New England favorite, McIntosh. By fermenting this blend of varieties with our own yeast we are able to produce an aroma that has a clean, fruity character. This crisp, refreshing cider has just the right balance of ripe apple sweetness and tartness from the fruit’s natural acidity. The color of this smooth tasting cider is very light as a result of using only freshly pressed apples. Without the addition of preservatives, artificial colors, or sweeteners we have created a cider that is fresh, pure, and delicious. Enjoy!

(12oz bottle, best by 6/03/08) Minimal fizzy head that vanishes immediately to leave a nearly still, crystal clear apple juice body. Aroma is moderately sweet, apple, perfume, some tartness, some astringency. Taste is medium sweet, apple, some seltzer. Minimally carbonated light body, minimal crispness.

Draft… Clear, light straw-colored cider with no head. The aroma is of oven-baked, spiced apples. Light-bodied with a mildly creamy mouthfeel and a rumor of carbonation. Nice balance between sweetness and acidity. Tart, dry finish

I’m surprised to be the first to review this one. Pours yellow. Smells a little on the fusel side initially before swet tarte apples reveal themselves. Some sugary hints come out as the cider warms. Mouthfeel is a little on the thin side as is to be expected of a cider. Finisg is sweet with some tarte undertones. A surprising release from Harpoon in that it is very palatable.

Bottle from Pat’s Liquors in Porter, Indiana: Not a lot to report here. It pours a pale, clear yellow body with a tad of visible carbonation, most of the tiny bubbles glued to the bottom of the glass. The aroma is fresh, soft sweet apples. Pretty much the taste of it, too, except that there’s a slight flavor of apple skin and the modest amount of spritziness keeps it from getting too sweet. Okay, I s’pose.

Bottle: Flat, no head. Nose is light with apple but more on the sulpher and burnt wood side. The flavor is sweet and tepid with a cloying aftertaste and a dull thin body. Not very up front with the fresh apples or showing off a more dry yeasty musky side either. Kinda boring.

On tap at Harpoon Brewery, 8 October 2009. The guide made a big thing of this being the most natural cider around. Obviously he had never heard of traditional farmhouse ciders, which became clear when I explained that cider could be fermented from the natural yeasts on the apple skins and he was not aware of that. In reality, although this was better than most "industrial" ciders, it was pretty lacking in interest compared to a real farmhouse cider. Clean enough, with lots of apple flavour. Relatively sweet. Straightforward and easy drinking. Not much else to say.

Pours very light golden greenish with no head. Aroma is apple, pear, white grape. Tastes like good apple cider from a afarm diluted and mixed with stale cardboard and plastic. This one is one of the few ciders I’ve had that got worse as ti warmed, showing its true colors as a mass market abomination that cause me to drain pour the last few ounces. I harbor no ill will toward Harpoon, but they need to stay out of the cider market and continue making mediocre beers.
