12oz Bottle. Wonderful deep roast aroma, deepened with pilsner malt mineral qualities and sweet fig jam. Pours dark, but clear red-mahogany, with a swirl and lick of tan head. Flavor plays a bit lighter. The pils malt jumps forward and roasts take a backseat to generic stout-like alcoholic, warm cream, and brown sugar. Generally, a very generic strong beer flavor. Texture is nice, covering the mouth, but laying light and giving a rising sense. Alcohols aren’t harsh, but add complexity. This beer could use some more heft though, in thickness and darkness. I like the pils lager character but want more oily blackness. Too pale, too bland, and gets a little acrid in the end. Thanks so much Sean!

Pours a very deep dark chestnut brown with dark mahogany edges and a one finger light beige head that slowly fades into a lasting ring. Roasted malt aroma with lots of bitter dark chocolate, toffee, roasted coffee bean, oatmeal, burnt toast and slight dark fruit. There is also an earthy hoppy character in the nose. Softly carbonated deep roasty body with a somewhat viscous silky chocolate maltiness and a dry earthy hoppy finish. Very well balanced with the perfect amount of sweet chocolate maltiness countering the roasted coffee bean/burnt toast that’s prominent up front. Hints of caramel, toffee and dark fruit with a slight nut presence. Roasty and sweet with a subtle dry finish. Very good.

Excellent. Another really good higher alcohol porter (along w/ Alpha Klaus). I like these a good deal more more than imperial stouts. The slightly less intense flavor and less intense sweetness make them so much easier to drink and more enjoyable. So aroma of caramel roasted nuts and light fruitiness, tastes chocolatey with vanilla, bitterness, a little bit of fruity hoppiness. Incredibly well hid alcohol! And dry / sweet balance is great too.

Traded bottle. Pours a cola dark brown with the accompanying tan head that quickly disappears. BIG aroma of chocolate, roasted malt and some nutiness. Really nice flavour of more bitter chocolate but also some heat from the alcohol. Interesting spice in the finish too. Pretty nice.

Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, fruit, vanilla, coffee, and a hint of alcohol. It pours a dark brown with some transparent red highlights when held to the light and a small off-white head. The flavor starts with chocolate and caramel. The is a light-moderate fruitiness in the finish with some light roastiness. Medium bodied with mild carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel.

Bottle from downtown crown, bottled 11/09. Pours nighttime dark with deep red transparency. Nose is dark roasted malt and some coffee notes. Flavor is soft and smooth, bitter chocolate and coffee malt, faint red fruit hints and a slight overpowering abv flavor. Very pleasant overall flavor in this one, great beer for this cold winter night. Definitely cracked this one a tad too soon, but curiosity got the best. Not bad young, I’ll have to try it old someday.

Pours near black with reddish hues and a thin tan head. Notes of toffee, dark bread, roasted sugars, rum, and spice. Full to thick bodied with moderate carbonation. This beer is still very intense, it would likely benefit from at least a few months of aging.

An almost black pour with very little head but a light off white lace. Aroma is light chocolate, burnt coffee, and a hint of peat. Flavor is more chocolate, with the burnt coffee. Nice medium full bodied beer with smooth creamy mouthfeel. Very nice. A just right warmth.
