Pours a five-finger brown head that takes a while to fade leaving a good lace. Totally black color. Good carbonation and heavy bodied. Malty nose. Flavor is a smoky caramel and chocolate. Clean finish. One of Harpoon’s best offerings. $3.00 for a 750ml bottle from a Tully’s Beer & Wine Wells, ME.

An almost black pour with very little head but a light off white lace. Aroma is light chocolate, burnt coffee, and a hint of peat. Flavor is more chocolate, with the burnt coffee. Nice medium full bodied beer with smooth creamy mouthfeel. Very nice. A just right warmth.

Bottle shared at tasting by hopsleery. Thanks man! Pours a maroonsih brown color with a light beige head. Smell is smoky, roasty and a lot of nice maltiness. Taste is lightly roasty and mild with some smokiness and balancing hops. Perfect amount of sweetness. Light char flavor. Surprising and very good overall.

Bottle from downtown crown, bottled 11/09. Pours nighttime dark with deep red transparency. Nose is dark roasted malt and some coffee notes. Flavor is soft and smooth, bitter chocolate and coffee malt, faint red fruit hints and a slight overpowering abv flavor. Very pleasant overall flavor in this one, great beer for this cold winter night. Definitely cracked this one a tad too soon, but curiosity got the best. Not bad young, I’ll have to try it old someday.

thing warm brown soapy head, fades fast. Deep, deep blood brown red at edges, clear. Smells of chocolate, smoke, cherries, old cheese, a bunch of other things I can’t put my finger on. Tastes just like it smells. Long sweet BBQ sauce aftertaste. mmmmh. slight pepper but definite sweet notes. hint of molasses.

Appearance: deep reddish brown. Murky, but bright in front of the light. Big fluffy head. *Looks* like a Big Beer. The aroma is heavy raisin and dark grape. Some roasted mocha and coffee. Dark and rich. Hint of dark sweetness. Dark cherries and oak. The taste is bitter, bitter dark marlt. A bit sugary but also slightly sour. Grape, dates, raisins. A MAJOR burn on the way down, like rum. Burnt cookies. The feel is creamy and milky. Smooth and buttery; no grit. This beer is seriously bitter and hefty. A slow sipper and a beast, but a delicious beast.
