vyvvy (2023), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Nov 5, 2009 Pours tawny brown with a dense tannish head that disappears quickly. The aroma has sweet malt, earthy Belgian yeast, dough and rich toffee. Medium / thick body that is sticky and cloying and has fairly mellow carbonation. The flavor starts with the aroma traits and has plenty of alcohol heat and is very sweet - even for a quad. The finish is quite warming and there are some medicinal traits. Okay for an American version of a quad. bitbucket (2026), Kirkland, Washington, USA Oct 28, 2009 12-oz., poured blind. Pours clear amber. A little hot on the taste. Seems like it would benefit from some more time in the bottle. The hoppiest and the simplest of the group of quads. Icommonsewer (122), TUCSON, Arizona, USA Oct 2, 2009 I found this ale to be way too tart. I’m not a big Belgian fan but I have had some nice ones... this was not one of them. rds (224), USA Sep 30, 2009 Yes, yeasty aroma plus notes of plum, with a thin white head, a cloudy rust brown or maybe orange, explodes with figs, spice and banana, nary a trace of the strong alcohol present. Very nice balance, with a bit of dryness to offset the fruity malt. MartinT (5026), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Sep 17, 2009 My Bottom Line:
Doughy yeast, pear esters and caramelized cereals converge in this mighty fine Quadrupel, coherently leading to a delicate finish of peppery alcohol and plum-like edges.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy sheet of foam decorates the cloudy purplish brown.
-The doughy yeast presence might be a tad too prominent in the flavor profile for this to be a world-class example of the style.
-The fruit personality is diverse; from pears to cherries to prunes to raisins, etc.
-The plump body is a great feature, its heft alleviated by a wealth of tiny bubbles.
-Some roastiness is offset by the alcohol warmth.
Bottle. BuckeyeBoy (1639), Boise, Idaho, USA Sep 15, 2009 Bottle Pours out a dark amber topped with a small off white head. Aroma was lots of pitfruit, belg yeast and some sweetness. Taste more of the belg yeast some banana along with plenty swettness. Thanks Toby douglas88 (1556), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Sep 13, 2009 The last bottle of the night at Toby’s house- wow what a night it was. Pours a dark amber color with a small white head. The aroma is interesting; sweet banana esters, rich malts and yeast. A warm flavor, lots of spicy Belgian yeast and candies, fruity and fairly dry. Nice. asheft (1374), Marburg, Germany Aug 29, 2009 [bottle]
Potent sour white grape and cherry aroma with powdered brown sugar and loads of dried fruit. Hazy chestnut with clots of trub (my bad pour?) and a lasting, off-white flannel blanket. Sweet toffee with some sour dried fruits and tobacco as well as brown sugar. A dry bitterness comes in with a little ethanol to balance the initial sweetness. Peppery herbal notes as well. Medium body, medium carbonation, lasting dry bitterness in the finish.
