Commercial Description:
Inspired by the centuries-old Bavarian beer, our Harpoon Munich Dark has a dark, balanced maltiness complimented with a moderate hop finish. We introduced this beer in 1998 and received first prize for Best Beer Overall of 1998 in BarleyCorn Magazine

Yes. This is how an American brewery makes a dunkel. There are so many breweries who could learn from this. Hell, even Becks Dark and Heinekein can’t come close to this well made dark beer.

Really nice smell to this, which is surprising since I was expecting something foul from the ratings... but it’s got some chocolate, some scotch notes, of course the heaviest note being the chewy munich malts, but also some pumpkin bread spices and such. Flavor is spicy and toasty rye bread and cider, with a wood dryness that compliments the sweeter malt flavors. By no means is this spectacular, but honestly it tastes pretty good. I can’t believe I’m saying that about something from Harpoon.

A decent dunkel. Aroma was pretty weak. Could pick up dark and roasted malt. Pour was average. Deep dark brown with barely a one finger tan head. Taste was nice and toasty. A little thin. Dark malt, a hint chocolate malt and a nice roasted aftertaste. A bit of coffee after the swallow, but not like a porter. Quite drinkable and good.

Quite possibly the best thing Harpoon has ever put out. Dark body. Dark taste. Dark feel. Not too thick, and goes down smoothly.

Roast coffee aroma. Purple amber color with a light brown head taht wasn’t particularly thick. The malts were clearly present in the mild coffee-like taste. I think this would be good to drink on a cold winter night.

Good heavy dark beer. Quite rich and flavorful with faint hints of chocolate. Good roasted flavors without tasting burnt.
