Nose is caramel and vanilla with a hint of coffee. Taste is dark coffee, bitter chocolate and malted milk balls. Bitter aftertaste. NYHarvey (2154), New York, New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 19, 2005 Updated: Jul 19, 2007Smelled like roasted hazelnuts and carob. Poured with a smallish fading head. Nice feel almost approaches a watery porter. Well balanced flavors and benefits from a good hop/malt ratio. Solid. lagermonkey (597), Marietta, Georgia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 10, 2005 Pours a brownish-mahogany with a creamy, very light tan head. Lacy throughout. Smells of coffe and caramel. Maybe some toffee in there?
Tastes if coffee but the bitterness is offset by a light caramel sweetness. Burnt malt and a light fruitiness. Very creamy and pretty smooth considering the potential for bitter flavors in a dark ale. Damn drinkable. Not a fan of Harpoon but this one stands out.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 7, 2005 Probably the best brew in the harpoon mix pack (read: the only one with any distinctive flavor). Malty sweet caramel-ish flavor. Not too thick, and pretty easy to drink overall. I wouldn’t buy it separately, but I guess I enjoyed my 3 bottles. darkerdabetter (255), Michigan, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 5, 2005 Nice dark amber color, thin head, good aroma, slightly sweet and definetely has roasted chocolate and caramel flavor. Very smooth, with a good finish, enjoyed. jimhilt (1691), Bow, New Hampshire, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 29, 2005 Pours with a one-finger light tan head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Color is a very deep amber. Medium bodied. Nose is sweet malt. Medium carbonation. Starts with a sweet roasted/burnt coffee/chocolate flavor, finish has just a hint of bitterness. The Sam Adams Black is better. $1.85 for a 12 oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma. tbarnette (105), Allen Park, Michigan, USA
