I smell cinnamon and chocolate at first pass, a little coffee in the second, perhaps some caramel. This is pretty sweet and has a nice bitter finish on the tip of the tongue and back of the roof of the mouth. Medium to long finish. Caramel molasses flavors, slightly syrupy. A little more carbonation than I would prefer, but I definitely pick up some coffee notes in the flavor that I enjoy. There is a present sourness, but not offending. Good dark color, roasted malt flavor, maybe a little thin but overall pretty good. jimmack34 (570), Lancaster, Ohio, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 2, 2009 Bottle. Had this one a couple years ago. Poured dark brown with a fizzy tan head. Smelled of coffee and roasted malts. Tasted like roasted coffee and light chocolate. Nice carmely malt. NobleSquirrel (1120), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 1, 2009 Bottle from Binny’s South Loop. Pours a dark brown, looks like a typical dunkel. Nose is sweet and malty. No hop character in the nose. Taste is sweet, a little caramel and chocolate. Finishes reasonably dry. Again, no hop character but super drinkable. Nice. johnnyoski (163), Macomb, Michigan, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 18, 2009 12oz bottle: Pour dark brown with a red hue. Thin, off white head. Very faint sweetness, with a more powerful malty aroma. Initial taste is sweet with hints of caramel. The sweetness fades and takes on more of a roasty, bitter chocolate taste. Leaves decent lacing. Medium body. Mouthfeel was a little too much malty carbonation. I felt this took away some of the flavor. Still a pretty drinkable and enjoyable beer. MarkBarnes (266), Waterville, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 14, 2009 Feb. 14, 2009; 12 oz. bottle fr. Harpoon sampler pack. Nice bitterness & complexity to this -- much better than I expected. Roasty, dark chocolate, almost stout-like notes. A winner. Heathen (810), Riverside, New Jersey, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 29, 2009 THOUGHTS: Really nice. Not a huge Harpoon fan, so this was a really big surprise. Not the greatest beer, but a wonderful dunkel. Not the best I’ve had, but certainly not the worst.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium mahogany that was red in the light with a large, off-white head that kept a nice sheet and left just slight lacing. The aroma was nice but weak. It was moderate roasted and caramel malts, lighter chocolate and coffee, light hops and something like a very light cherry. The flavor started sweet and slightly bitter, and finished lightly bitter and lightly sour with an average duration. There was caramel malt, roasted malt, very light coffee and a finish of mild hops. The medium body was sorta syrupy with fizzy carbonation and a metallic and lightly astringent finish. fredandboboflo (1417), East Setauket, New York, USA

Semisweet chocolate rounds it out. Flavor rich, sweet but not unbalanced, continues to be quite nutty with the chocolate and caramel notes. Nice brew here.
