argo0 (6176), Washington DC, USA May 30, 2008 (22oz bottle, thanks wickedpete) Small beige head atop clear copper body. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, light peat. Taste is medium sweet, caramel, peach, faint chocolate. Low carbonation, light-medium body. CaptainCougar (4637), Rockville, Maryland, USA May 3, 2008 Pours a transparent amber mahogany with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Aroma of sweaty earthy caramel malts and some mild piny hops. Body starts with a decent fullness, some light caramel sweetness and a touch of earthy sugars and milk chocolate. A decent Scottish ale. muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA Feb 19, 2008 22 ounce bottle from City Market in Burlington, VT (February 2008), consumed a bit below cellar temperature from a Samuel Smiths pint glass. Faintly hazy/translucent dark maple with a voluminous, soft and bubbly off-white head that recedes slowly and laces thickly....light roasty, chocolaty malts are alas somewhat capsized by a strong soapy character in the nose; this fades somewhat after a few minutes and an earthy touch comes in, but the detergent never disappears entirely....the body is earthy, lightly herbal, moderately sweet at the front but drying out considerably at the finish, no trace of hops, light caramelized malts -- and again, unfortunately, a soapiness that really kills it....low carbonation, slick and somewhat oily....fail. DocLock (4102), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 14, 2008 22 oz bottle. Pours burnt sienna/deep ruby with 1-finger khaki head. Nose is scotch malt, brown sugar, figgy fruit, hops. Tastes scotch malty, caramelly, with peaty, earthy, and mild rauchy notes, plus brown sugar, hops, and dark fruit, all of which seem to mesh together very well, giving this one a smoothness and high level of drinkability. This is, without a doubt, the finest Harpoon beer I have yet quaffed.
