Cask at 3rd Manhattan Cask Fest. Very dark brown beer. Thin head. The aroma is quite chocolatey with a prominent licorice note. Quite phenolic bit without being overly astringent. Burnt sugar and heavy debittered carafa character. Fizzy and a little bit plummy. It is quite intense, bordering on Belgian Stout like territory. Fairly intense with some heavy chewy figs and dried dates. Not all that roasty but there is an intensity to the dark sweet malt character that is quite unusual. As it warms up, it gets a little bit intense with the heavy spiciness and the heavy molasses sweetness. It might be tolerable in smaller amounts but it’s just so chewy and sweet that it’s tough to take.
