Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle only.
"Best Sussex Pale Ale"
Awarded first prize at the International Brewers’ Exhibition in 1976, this premium pale ale is brewed to an original gravity of 1036° -1040° and ‘dry hopped’ during the period of maturation prior to bottling. The result is a full-bodied pale ale which should impart a delicate hop character behind the residual sweetness of the malt sugars.

Bottled. An amber coloured beer with a small off-white ring of bubbles. This is very much an old fashioned English bottled beer that I imagine is primarily used these days to water down strong beers or to mix with a mild. Having said all that it has some unexpected sweet boozy notes in amongst the cardboard notes from the pasteurisation and general feel of being brewed down. It’s low maintenance and a bit odd.

Bottle from the brewery shop at home. Aroma is minerally caramel, light woody tannic near coffee character. Taste is similar, the toffee apple malt character from all harveys beers, balanced lots of minerallyness. Good drinkable stuff.

Mail order. Pale yellow with scant head. Light smoke at the finish, medium body and a bit of sweetness in the middle. Nice complexity.

275ml bottle. Deep brown body under a creamy, beige head. Slightly dry malty smell. Thin malty flavour with notes of hops behind. Light, foamy mouthfeel (Pembroke College, Oxford 16.03.2008).

A bottle, generously given to me by Mr.Silktork himself. Which I am now going to rate higher than that notorious Harvey’s fan(atic). This is a blue moon sort of day.

Warm copper, bit of off-white head. The smell of old-fashioned candy store, wool, musky apple. Apple tartness and brine flavor, delicate farmy hops that evaporate in perfect concert with fine bright carbonation, filling out the body and making even this very light bitter feel interesting and distinctive. Lingering quinine finish. Not sure if my bottle is just in unusually good shape, but I think this is a cracking little beer, with a surprising amount of interest for the strength.
