Commercial Description:
Generally available only in pasteurised bottle. Has occasionally appeared in cask. Currently 8.2%, but has been brewed at 8.1% and 8.3%.
Originally brewed to mark the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, this golden barley wine proved so popular that it has been brewed ever since. It is comparable in strength to the beer produced by Tudor brewers during the reign of Elizabeth I. It has won many prizes and, at the International Brewers’ Exhibition 1968, was awarded the Championship Gold Medal. Regular drinkers simply asked for a ‘Lizzie’.

1998 bottle. Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. Surprised there was still carbonation! Candy apple, tart cherry and toffee aroma. Taste is thin toffee, tart fruit and an off bitterness. The aroma is there, but there seems to have been some oxidation that has given it some off flavors.

275 ml bottle Ƙ.1%) ordered via the internet from the brewery. At last, one of the pack which really hit the spot. Unremarkable when intiially poured, little carbonation, no head, a light red in colour. However the nose shouted alcohol with an earthy aroma and perhaps a hint of cough mixture. Whilst it took me ime to accept the overt sweetness, in the mouth this beer had a really strong kick from the high alcohol content.with toffee and malt prominent. I really enjoyed this one. And I’ve got another left for future drinking!

1988 bottling, 21 years old. Deep amber with no head - just a whisper of bubbles on the surface, and it is still. Aroma is full and heady; rum at first, then powerful honey and apples and peaches with a stirring warm spice - like cinnamon or cardamom. The taste is a slap in the face; it hits a flat note like bread or wet cardboard, at first disconcerting; but then changes into a dry, winelike sweetness and complexity. It leaves a long aftertaste of apple, peach, apricot, and toffee. A rare treat.
