I am basing my numbers on the 01 bottle
OStreetBrewery (96), Wellington, New Zealand Oct 6, 2008 2003 vintage, Pours a viscous pitch black with the faintest disappearing wispy head. The aroma features a stunning cornucopia of aromas. Dried fruit, raisins, prunes, figs, a distinctive sour fruit character reminiscent of the Rodenbach beers, Passionfruit, iron and a touch of saltyness blended a delicious funky brettanomyces character. Complex to say the least. On the palate there is luscious aged malt, a surprising level of body considering the sour/brett character in the nose, a salty note, some passionfruit and iron, a suggestion of sourness, roasty malt notes and a hint of autolysised yeast. Outstanding beer, my beer of the year in fact. thomat (580), Göteborg, Sweden Sep 29, 2008 Very dark brown without any head. Sour with vinous tones. Coffee, plums and sherry taste. Full body with a bitter aftertaste. heynik1885 (26), tonawanda, New York, USA Sep 25, 2008 01 bottle, something diff for sure, poured with no head, not a usual imperial stout, sour type smell, and taste, some roasted notes towards the end, not something i will venture to drink again! BeerGestapo (351), Windsor, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 23, 2008 Brewed in England. Year 2003 !!! Pours a pitch black color with zero head. The aroma smells like it just came out of a barrel. There is a strong presence of wine, molasses, and malts. The taste is intense !! There is a dry alcohol flavor that ends really bitter. This is very different from most of the beers that i’ve had..........Not for the weak, :) Merrill (23), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 23, 2008 Purchased from Binny’s in Near suoth Chicago. Reading Pawla22’s review of August 29, I think that is right on. Pours like it was left open for a week, flat as something drained from your car that should’ve been changed 12.000 mi earlier. The aroma is old port, turned merlot and a little tree sap. First impression is sweet/sour - did this spoil?- sort of flavor. Very "old port." Must have been in a barrel along time. The soy and urine abound masking a roasted deep malt Feel the hops rather than taste it. Holy Mother of God. This is either the best stout I ever tasted or a nightmare of what they serve in hell. Be vewy, vewy caaful with this one.
