Mitch_Wayne (100), Kokkola, Finland Aug 7, 2008 More fun than sweet sussex but still very thin and uninteresting, this time at least you get some aroma out of it. Prunes and liquorice, thin body, a bit of a dryish note in the ending. downender (1521), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Jun 22, 2008 275ml bottle. Dark chestnut with a moderate off-white head. Aroma of caramel with some earthiness. Sweet toffee flavour with some chewy malt and a short, dry finish. Ok. Rune (1508), Tromsø, Norway Mar 24, 2008 275ml bottle. This is an ale that got more for the eyes than the palate. Great appearance with a solid beige head resting on a mahogany body with ruby highlights. Light malty aroma and roasted sugar-like malts in flavour. Watered (Thanks to Wivi-Ann and Andrew for bringing an eight pack of Harveys from Lewes to Oxford, 15.03.2008). Ethereal (880), London, Greater London, England Feb 10, 2008 275ml bottle. Pours a chestnutty mid brown. Aroma of caramel malt and nutty hints. Alas, the flavour is bland and dominated by diacetyl. The palate is similarly compromised - slick and thin. Much as I love Harveys, I’d only cook with this. SilkTork (3865), Rochester, Kent, England Jan 24, 2008 275ml bottle mail order from the brewery. O yes - now this is a fascinating brown ale. Unlike other low abv brown ales which tend toward straight sticky sweetness, this is more subtle, more complex and much more fascinating. There’s tobacco, burnt toffee, flat cola, red wine, muffled wool, raw meat and pigs blood flavours. There’s so much going on - nothing too assertive, but everything presented cleanly and clearly in an enticing and fascinating manner. There’s an invigorating freshness about this. A boldness that’s disarming and exciting. Great.
